LTC 052-2019 Superbowl LV MIAMIBEACH OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER NO. LTC# 052-2019 LETTER TO COMMISSION TO: Mayor Dan Gelber and Members o the City fi ommission FROM: Jimmy L. Morales, City Manager DATE: January 29, 2019 SUBJECT: Superbowl LV The purpose of this Letter to Commi-sion is to inform the Mayor and the City Commission that on January 30, 2019, personnel from the Miami Beach Police and Fire Departments will travel to Atlanta to observe Atlanta's and the National Football League's preparations for and implementation of the security plan for Super Bowl LIV. Our personnel, who are a part of the Miami Dade Super Bowl LV Committee, are taking this step as part of their preparation for next year's Super Bowl events here in Miami Beach and in multiple venues in Miami-Dade County. The Miami-Dade Super Bowl LV Committee has been meeting with the NFL organizers, the U.S. Secret Service and other federal partners to plan for the next year's event for the past five months. Various subcommittees, all of which have MBPD and MBFD representatives, have been tasked with planning and preparing for the contingencies associated with the Super Bowl. It is a long-standing practice that the next year's security team attends the current Super Bowl to observe police, fire, emergency medical, security and intelligence operations as they are executed by the host city with the NFL and the Secret Service. This is done so that the team can learn and absorb first-hand the best practices for this event. The Super Bowl is actually a weeklong event across multiple venues. While next year's game will take place in Miami Gardens on Sunday, the "NFL Experience," a major fan festival, will take place at the Miami Beach Convention Center throughout the prior week. In addition, we can expect that Miami Beach will be the scene of innumerable social events all week long, as it was in 2010, the last year in which our region hosted the game. Fire Chief Virgil Fernandez and Police Deputy Chief Rick Clements will lead the Miami Beach first responders traveling to Atlanta. All Miami Beach personnel will return at the conclusion of the event on February 4, 2019. JLM:DJO:RC:tr
