SUBJECT Miami Beach High School Techni al Training Program
I am pleased to announce that the City of Miami Beach Building Department is partnering with
the International Code Council (ICC) to offer Miami Beach High students in the 11th & 12th
grade the opportunity to get an advanced look at building codes for those interested in
pursuing careers in the construction profession. Miami Beach is committed to investing in
education, and this is one new and rather unique way of providing the next generation with an
opportunity in an important south Florida Industry.
This program is based on the International Residential Code (IRC) and covers the following
disciplines: building, electrical, mechanical (HVAC), plumbing, masonry and energy. Upon
completion of the program, students will: be able to navigate the codebook; understand code
requirements associated with their discipline; ensure code compliance as they work on
residential construction projects; be better prepared to take the inspectors exam or licensing
exams for their profession.
The program is free for students and will be offered as an after school course that will take
place once a week on Tuesdays in the Building Department conference room. The program
will run with the 2019/2020 school year. The instructors for this course will be licensed building
inspectors with extensive knowledge in the trade being discussed be it building, mechanical,
electrical, and plumbing. Upon completing one of the trades listed above, students have the
opportunity to obtain Certificate of Completion from ICC.
The cost to the City for each student is $74.00 payable to ICC for the student ICC membership
($25) and study companion ($49). We have planned a max of 10 students per year.
Additional costs to the City include:
• Annual ICC membership $150
• Per class fee of $100 for the instructor. Estimate of $3,600 per year at 1 class per
week (36 weeks)
The total yearly cost of this program is estimated to be $4,490. All expenses to be paid by the
city's Building Department education fund.
Attached is the informational flyer that will be distributed to Miami Beach High including a link
to apply to the program. More information on the International Code Council and the High
School Technical Program can be found at www.iccsafe.rog/hsttp
