LTC 309-2019 Washington Avenue - Temporary Tree Lighting and Events MIAMI BEACH
OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER
NO. LTC# 309 2019 LETTER TO COMMISSION
TO: Mayor Dan Gelber and Membe of the Ci Commission
FROM: Jimmy L. Morales, City Manag
DATE: May 29, 2019
SUBJECT: Washington Avenue — Temp rary Tree Lighting and Events
The purpose of this letter is to inform the Mayor and the City Commission that the
Washington Avenue Business Improvement District ("BID") has contracted with Brandano
Displays, Inc. to place temporary lighting in the medians along Washington Avenue from
5 to 17 Street, through a right-of-way permit. Currently they have installed lighting along
the 12th Street median. The entire street is planned for completion by the end of June with
future installations requiring a lift. The temporary lighting will be up for approximately 3
months and the BID will evaluate the effectiveness of promoting security, enhanced
aesthetic, and increased pedestrian flow.
The BID also plans to initiate the Washington Avenue live music, art, beer and wine series
("WAVE") starting in July on the third Thursday of each month inside a variety of
Washington Avenue merchant locations.
These initiatives are great temporary solutions to enhance the economic vitality of the
Washington Avenue's corridor. Staff supports these initiatives and will work with the BID
to facilitate the temporary lighting permit process.
