SUBJECT: Motion by the Committee on the Ho eless
This Letter to Commission transmits a motion made by the Committee on the Homeless at its July
9th meeting.
Affordable housing is a community wide need that will benefit many, including work force employees,
seniors, and vulnerable residents. Some sectors of our homeless population will be positively
impacted as well and have direct need. It would be beneficial to the community for directed
funding for this issue. Seniors, families, victims of domestic violence, veterans, LGBTQ and
transgender young adults, and young adults just out of foster care, are especially vulnerable and can
escape homelessness with affordable housing assistance. Another large component, that is not
housing, but a step towards being healthy for housing, is treatment beds, which are in short supply.
Our MBPD has specifically identified that they need more treatment beds for their groundbreaking
and successful Marchman program getting treatment for our chronic population that have addiction
issues.
The following motion was made by Ms. Lori Bakkum, seconded Ms. Debby Schwartz and
approved unanimously by the Committee on the Homeless.
The Committee on the Homeless supports an allocation of development fees to assist in
housing for the most vulnerable people, described above, who are homeless or likely to
become homeless, that will benefit from housing assistance and an allocation to a fund for
MBPD and Homeless Outreach to draw from specifically for treatment beds, as needed to get
people off the streets.
The Committee on the Homeless is comprised of the following members:
• Ms. Valerie Navarrete, Chair
• Ms. Lori Bakkum
• Mr. Darren Cefalu
• Ms. Marcella Paz-Cohen
• Ms. Charoltte Tomic
• Ms. Helen Swartz
