OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER
NO. LTC#, 451-2019
LETTER TO COMMISSION
TO: Mayor Dan Gelber and Members f the City ommission
FROM: Jimmy Morales, City Manager
DATE: August 12, 2019 lI
SUBJECT: Status of First Annual Communit Employee Health and Wellness Fair
At the November 21, 2018 Neighborhood/Community Affairs Committee (NCAC)
meeting there was a discussion item in support of the Health Advisory Committee's
motion to support the City's initiative of putting together a Community Health Fair for
2019. We are pleased to invite you to the City's first Community & Employee Health and
Wellness Fair that will take place on Wednesday, September 4th, from 10am to 3pm.
The Human Resources Department customarily plans an annual Health & Wellness Fair
for employees and retirees. After the NCAC meeting, they immediately began the
process of planning the fair to include Miami Beach residents. The purpose of the fair is
to improve the health and wellness of our residents, employees and retirees and
increase their access to health, financial, physical and community resources while
building awareness of risks and providing information on how to make changes to
improve lifestyles.
A planning committee was organized, comprised of city staff as well as our benefits
consultant to define tasks, assess needs and interests, and establish goals and
objectives to execute the event. Their first priority was to secure a venue that would
adequately accommodate vendors and participants. The committee estimates the
number of attendees at 1000-2500, which includes employees and retirees. With the
assistance of the Tourism Department, the committee confirmed the Miami Beach
Convention Center for September 4, 2019 from 10a to 3p. In keeping with the City's
current wellness initiatives for its employees that have positively impacted many lives,
the committee decided that an appropriate theme for the event would be "Catch the
Wellness Wave". Our residents can join City employees in building a resilient City by
changing unhealthy behaviors through initiatives that educate the cornerstones of
wellness: financial wellbeing, physical wellbeing, career wellbeing, social/emotional
wellbeing and workplace wellness.
In addition to the vendors that provide health and financial benefits to our employees
and retirees, the Committee expanded the invite to fitness facilities, financial institutions,
state and county organizations and community resources vendors. The committee has
planned a well-rounded and educational fair with 70+ vendors who are all excited about
the opportunity to meet with residents and employees to promote wellness. In addition
to the vendors, we have confirmed various city departments to participate in displaying
information and/or demonstrations to our residents consistent with building a wellness
culture and community. For instance, the Environment & Sustainability Department will

display information on keeping Miami Beach clean and alternatives to using plastic. The
Fire Department will conduct mini First Aid and CPR sessions. For a full list of vendors
and their role in the event, see Attachment 1.
The Marketing and Communications Department has been instrumental in assisting the
committee with promoting this event to ensure a large turnout. They have posted the
event information on the city's website and FaceBook. Posting is also scheduled for
MBTV, Twitter, Nextdoor and electronic news letters in English and Spanish. Postcards
of the event were distributed to participating vendors, homeowners' associations, all city
boards and committees, as well as throughout city departments where residents
frequently visit. To increase participation, the Transportation Department will have the
Middle Beach Trolley stop in front of the event at the Convention Center and 19'h Street
(during event hours). Transportation has also partnered with Freebee to offer free rides
to and from the Community Health Fair during event hours from their service areas of
South Beach and Middle Beach
As we near the event date, the committee is working diligently to finalize the floorplan,
the flow of the participants throughout the facility, and the event program (see
Attachment 2). Since this is the first year that such an endeavor has been attempted,
we are asking for the participation and support of the Mayor and Commissioners, along
with Management Team members to motivate increased participation of residents and
employees.
