OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER
NO. LTC # 559-2019 LETTER TO COMMISSION
TO: Mayor Dan Gelber and Members of tie City Co /mission
FROM: Jimmy L. Morales, City Manager
DATE: October 17, 2019
SUBJECT: Historic Preservation Board Special eeting
I am pleased to announce and invite you to a special meeting of the Historic
Preservation Board on October 29, 2019 at 5:30 p.m. in the City Commission Chambers
to hear the study results of the Shulman & Associates team developing design
guidelines for historic properties in the face of climate change and sea level rise.
The city's climate adaptation efforts began with stormwater upgrades and amendments
to the land use code for new construction. This is an important addition to our
adaptation efforts given that we have 14 important local historic districts in Miami Beach.
Providing resilience options and guidance for property owners is a priority for the City.
Over the last six months an interdisciplinary team led by Allan T Shulman, Architect PA
including Dlandstudio Landscape Architecture, SJ Hauck House Movers, YHCE
Structural Engineering and Coastal Systems International, researched and developed a
series of design guidelines specific to two study areas located within low lying areas of
the Flamingo Park and Collins Waterfront local historic districts. The study, entitled
Buoyant City: Historic District Resiliency & Adaptation Guidelines, includes design
guidelines for short- and long-term adaptation of buildings based on typology as well as
strategies for adapting the urban landscape and streetscapes within the City's local
historic districts.
The special meeting of the HPB will allow the public to hear the results in its entirety.
We anticipate that the study will be completed in November and will be presented to City
Commission in December 2019 or January 2020. The meeting will be advertised for
your attendance and televised for maximum outreach.
Please join me.
