MIAMI BEACH CULTURE CRAWL U TAKEOVER NIGHT- JANUARY 16, 2020
The purpose of this Letter to Commission is to make the Mayor and Commission aware of the Miami Beach Culture
Crawl FIU Takeover night on Thursday, January 16, 2020. The Culture Crawl is an initiative from the Tourism and
Culture department, which had its first reiteration with a three-month run in the Spring of 2019. The event is aimed
at promoting local culture within the City of Miami Beach, by getting our residents and tourists to explore and become
re-acquainted with our nationally renowned cultural institutions, and various other cultural offerings.
Culture Crawl is a monthly occurrence, taking place on the Third Thursday of each month, October- May 6-9 PM,
and offers complimentary admission to some of the nation's most prestigious institutions, with unique and varied
programming, which is changed each month. The Tourism and Culture department works directly with each cultural
institution, to help produce specific programming which includes open studios and galleries, outdoor films, live
music, exclusive tours, night gardens, and free trolley service throughout South Beach. The program has continued
to grow throughout the season and returns to North Beach on February 20, 2020. This event is 100% free and open
to the public.
For the January 16, 2020 Culture Crawl, Tourism and Culture has partnered
with Florida International University (FIU) for a special "FIU Takeover Night".
At 6:00PM January 16th, 2020, a designated FIU Takeover Trolley will depart
from Miami Beach Urban Studies (MBUS) complete with an Art Deco tour
guide. The FIU Takeover Trolley will visit a curated selection of Culture Crawl
stops, including MBUS, The Wolfsonian, Miami Beach Botanical Gardens,
Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach, The Bass and Miami-Dade Public Library.
Four dedicated free trolleys (the white ones) will continue to operate on normal
routes and will drop you off and pick you up at our dedicated Culture Crawl
stops - check out our map to find your closest stop.

For the January 16, 2020 Culture Crawl, we look forward to welcoming you to Collins Park for a site-specific,
commissioned work by artist Jen Clay. The Chase is moving performance where a group of people are slowly
chased by two ambiguous forms in a figure-eight shape while Richard Vergez creates a live soundscape of
dissonant noise to bring awareness to space, movement and time. Performances times are 7 p.m. and 8 p.m.
About Jen Clay
Clay was awarded the 2019 South Florida Cultural Consortium fellowship for her
wearable works, which are created for performances and videos and often speak
directly to the viewer, revealing obsession through dialog. Her video work has been
shown at Acre TV in Chicago, Visionary Film Festival in Milan, Italy, on Squeaky
Wheel, an art TV public broadcasting in Buffalo, NY, and Glasgow Independent
Film Festival. In 2017, for the OFF Site Performance Series organized by the Girls'
Club Collection in Fort Lauderdale. In 2019 The Young at Art Museum of Davie,
FL, invited Clay to create her first large scale site-specific piece, "Welcome to Me
& You". This piece is an immersive carpet and video installation with interactive
elements and projected videos of characters that speak to the viewers. In January
2020, Clay became a resident artist at Oolite Arts and holds her studio on Lincoln
Road.
The administration has been working with several meeting planners who are holding events at the Miami Beach
Convention Center, to offer them the same sort of take over experience for their attendees, during future Culture
Crawls. A full listing of the January Culture Crawl programming can be found at mbartsandculture.org.
