SUBJECT: Wastewater Break at 17 Street and 'incoln Road
On Monday evening Jaffer Well Drilling, a sub-contractor for Hy-Power, impacted a 42-inch sanitary
sewer main near the intersection of 17 Street and Lincoln Road. This incident caused the release of
wastewater onto the streets and into the stormwater system. The city was alerted of the damage on
Monday around midnight and immediately mobilized crews to minimize the amount of discharge and
contain the break. The spillage was confirmed stopped at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. Once stopped,
the city immediately began cleaning the area that was potentially affected.
The city has retained Ric-Man Construction of Florida, Inc. to repair the damage. Ric-Man has been
working since yesterday on removing the damaged pipe and will begin installation of the new pipe
tomorrow. The repair work is anticipated to be completed by the end of the week.
Starting yesterday, the city began collecting water quality samples in the waterways downstream of the
affected area to determine the extent of the impacted waters. Samples were collected at four locations
within Collins Canal. Based on the results of the first day of sampling, the city will be issuing a swim
advisory for Collins Canal from Lake Pancoast on 24 Street and Collins Avenue to Biscayne Bay.
Samples will continue to be collected daily on the bay and on the beach until they come back clean on
two consecutive days and the swim advisory can be lifted.
