SUBJECT: MIAMI BEACH POLICE DEPARTMENT POLICE ATHLETIC LEAGUE'S
CHIEF MARK OVERTON LAW ENFORCEMENT SCHOLARSHIP
This Letter to the Mayor and City Commission is to provide information on the MBPD
Police Athletic League's new Chief Mark Overton Law Enforcement Scholarship. This
scholarship is a collaborative effort between Miami Dade College Foundation, the Miami
Beach Police Athletic League, Carla Probus and Jonas Meyers.
The Chief Overton Law Enforcement Scholarship will be provided to individuals who
meet the following criteria:
a. Enrolled in a degree-seeking program pursuing studies in the Police Academy
Program.
b. U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
c. Demonstrated financial need based on federal financial aid standards, as
determined by the College's Financial Aid Office.
d. A cumulative grade point average of at least 2.8 at the College or, if newly
enrolled at the College, at prior institutions attended.
e. Graduate of Miami Beach Senior High OR resident of Miami Beach OR
participated in a Miami Beach Police Athletic League Program OR Explorer
Program.
f. Preference will be given to previous scholarship recipients should they continue
to meet the criteria.
The recipients will be chosen principally on the basis of academic performance or
potential, and the extent of unmet financial need. It is hoped this scholarship will honor
the memory of Chief Mark Overton and help provide an opportunity to individuals who wish
to pursue a law enforcement career.
