WH E REA S , military personnel relocating to South Dade have expressed a desire to live in
the City of Florida City (the "Cit y") however, the combination of most landlords requiring a three-
month upfront rental deposit, the added cost of utility deposits and other moving expenses exceed
most military families' monthly budget and the military's limited moving allowance; and
WHEREAS, the lack of available affordable housing and the high costs of moving (known
as the "affordability crisis'') has forced military personnel considering relocation to South Dade to
obtain housing outside of the City and to areas north of the South Dade and into Broward County;
and
WHEREAS, the City is the ideal place for military members and their families to live, work
and play; and
WHEREAS, the City is a vibrant community that offers a much-desired hometown feel with
our quaint neighborhoods, excellent schools and proximity to the Homestead Air Force-Reserve Base
for an easy commute to and from work; and
WHEREAS, curr ently, military personnel and their families can access on-base and off-base
housing through the Automated Hosing Referral Network, which provides trusted and up-to-date
housing listings in military communities; and '
WHEREAS, the South Dade Chamber of Commerce and its Military Affairs Committee
("MAC") are working with the Family Readiness Directors at our local military institutions to establish
a Military Rental Property Program ("MRPP") in South Dade; and
WHEREAS, renting to military personnel is a patrioti.e and gratifying activity and the City's
residents and area rental communities can take action to be "military-friendly" and "military-ready''
landlords by offering a variety of affordable housing solutions such as discounted monthly rent rates;
lower ini tial deposits; flexible lease terms; reduced application and administration fees; and expedited
processing of applications and background checks; and
WHEREAS, military members and their families make great tenants as they are demonstrated
to be hard-working and diligent, uphold a code of conduct that make them more likely to be attentive
to the rental property than other tenants and they can recommend the rental properties to other
military families; and
RE SOL UT IO N N O; 20-4 1
WVHEREAS, just as we rely on the service of our military personnel to keep us free, we need to
support our military personnel and let them know they can depend on us to give back to them and
their families when they need a place to call home; and
WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Florida City, FL finds that Resolution No:
20-41 is in the best interest and welfare of the residents.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSIONERS OF
THE CITY OF FLORIDA CITY, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS:
