Purchase Program
The purpose of this Letter to the Commission ("LTC") is to provide you with an update on
Art Week Miami Beach 2020.
With offerings ranging from public art exhibitions to socially distanced theatre, Art Week
Miami Beach 2020 was conceived in light of the socially distant world born from the
COVID-19 pandemic. Highlights of the week include the City of Miami Beach
produced No Vacancy, Miami Beach, a juried art competition that celebrates 10 artists
in 1 O of Miami Beach's famed hotels from December 2-12, 2020. For the inaugural
edition of No Vacancy, $25,000 in prizes will be awarded, divided between a $5,000
prize determined by public vote and a $20,000 prize awarded by a jury of art experts. On
Tuesday, December 1, 2020 the New York Times featured the program in an article
entitled "In Miami Beach, the Art Scene Has Moved Outdoors".
We are pleased to announce the $20,000 Juror's Choice has been awarded to Die-Cast,
who is presenting a digital-live hybrid installation performance piece entitled Temporary
Occupancy in the alleyway of The Betsy Hotel.
We encourage you to cast your vote for the $5,000 People's Choice Award, which will be
announced on December 12, 2020.
The City of Miami Beach Art in Public Places program will continue its second version of
the Legacy Purchase Program through OVR: Miami Beach', Art Basel's December
edition of Online Viewing Rooms, a virtual platform connecting the world's leading
galleries with our global network of collectors and art enthusiasts. This year, due to the
global COVID-19 Pandemic, the Art in Public Places Committee has elected to purchase
a work from a Miami-Dade County based gallery, an artist who lives and/or works in
Miami-Dade County, and/or by an artist who has a significant connection to the Miami-
Dade. The Art in Public Places Committee has selected three (3) works of art to put to a
public vote via online social channels at approximately 10 AM on Friday, December 4"
to 8PM on Saturday, December 5, The City will announce the work of art with the most
votes on Sunday, December 6, 2020. We encourage you to cast your yote for your
favorite artwork.
