HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 2026-34227RESOLUTION NO. 2026-34227 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, DIRECTING THE CITY ADMINISTRATION TO ARRANGE AND PARTICIPATE IN A MEETING WITH TECO GAS TO EMPHASIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF COMPLETING THE NECESSARY GAS SERVICE UPGRADES PRIOR TO THE COMPLETION OF THE WEST AVENUE NEIGHBORHOOD IMPROVEMENT PROJECT GENERATOR INSTALLATION (ESTIMATED AT APPROXIMATELY 18 MONTHS), AND FURTHER DIRECTING THE ADMINISTRATION TO PROVIDE AN LTC TO THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION WITHIN SIXTY (60) DAYS REPORTING ON THE RESULTS OF THESE EFFORTS. WHEREAS, TECO Gas currently lacks the capacity to provide the volume of natural gas required for the bi-fuel generator being installed as part of the West Avenue Neighborhood Improvement Project; and WHEREAS, TECO has implemented a moratorium limiting generator size and new natural gas usage due to system capacity constraints, and has informed the City that network upgrades are required before adequate natural gas service can be provided to the project; and WHEREAS, the generator is intended to power critical pump -station infrastructure necessary to prevent neighborhood flooding, particularly as roadway elevation improvements continue, and therefore the timing of TECO's upgrades is essential to ensuring the generator will function as designed; and WHEREAS, the project team —consisting of City staff, the contractor, and design engineers —has been in regular communication with TECO regarding the need to complete the upgrades prior to project completion, but additional high-level coordination is warranted to underscore the urgency and community impact of any delay; and WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission find that arranging a meeting with TECO leadership, emphasizing the importance of completing gas upgrades in advance of the generator becoming operational, and reporting back to the City Commission via an LTC within sixty (60) days will help ensure timely progress and provide transparency regarding TECO's commitments. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the that the Mayor and City Commission hereby direct the City Administration to arrange and participate in a meeting with TECO Gas to emphasize the importance of completing the necessary gas service upgrades prior to the completion of the West Avenue Neighborhood Improvement Project generator installation (estimated at approximately 18 months), and further direct the Administration to provide an LTC to the Mayor and City Commission within sixty (60) days reporting on the results of these efforts.
