A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH DIRECTING THE CITY ADMINISTRATION TO
PAUSE ALL WORK BY DESIGN CONSULTANTS RELATED TO THE
LOG CABIN PROJECT, INCLUDING ANY WORK PREVIOUSLY
AUTHORIZED BY PRIOR CITY COMMISSION RESOLUTIONS, IN
ORDER TO ALLOW FOR AN EVALUATION OF THE POTENTIAL TO
INCORPORATE THE LOG CABIN INTO THE LARGER WEST LOTS
PROJECT.
WHEREAS, the Log Cabin, originally constructed in 1934 by architect Emil
Ehmann, has long served as a community fixture within North Beach, historically
functioning as a plant nursery and later as a program facility for adults with disabilities;
and
WHEREAS, following structural deterioration, the City in 2017 approved funding
for the dismantling, removal, and catalogued storage of the salvageable components of
the Log Cabin, which were secured in two 20-foot storage containers; and
WHEREAS, the City subsequently engaged Dover, Kohl & Partners as part of the
North Beach Master Plan process to evaluate future placement and use options, leading
to a recommendation adopted in 2018 to reconstruct the Log Cabin within North Beach
Oceanside Park as a mixed -use community and information center with concessions; and
WHEREAS, in 2018, Miami Beach voters approved a General Obligation Bond
program that included $1,076,000 in funding for the Log Cabin project, and the City
Commission has thereafter adopted resolutions directing prioritization and advancement
of the project; and
WHEREAS, the City retained BEA Architects for the preparation of design and
construction documents, and design work has progressed; and
WHEREAS, during community engagement in 2025, North Beach residents
expressed interest in returning the Log Cabin to its original location on the West Lots,
prompting renewed consideration of siting alternatives; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission desire to fully evaluate the potential
to integrate the Log Cabin into a broader, comprehensive West Lots project before
additional consultant work proceeds; and
WHEREAS, the Administration shall evaluate options for incorporating the Log
Cabin into the larger West Lots project, including considerations of site planning, design
integration, community programming, potential project sequencing, and any additional
funding which may be required and present its findings to the appropriate Commission
committees.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City
Commission hereby directs the City Administration to pause all work by design
consultants, including any work previously authorized by prior City Commission
resolutions, in order to allow for an evaluation of the potential to incorporate the Log Cabin
into the larger West Lots project.
