HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 2026-34230RESOLUTION NO. 2 0 2 6- 3 4f 2 3 0 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH URGING THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION (FDOT) TO EVALUATE AND IMPLEMENT TRAFFIC CALMING OR OTHER SAFETY MEASURES ALONG THE A1A CORRIDOR (COLLINS AVENUE AND HARDING AVENUE/ABBOTT AVENUE BETWEEN 68TH STREET AND 87TH TERRACE) AND ALONG 71ST STREET IN NORTH BEACH, IN LIGHT OF RECENT SERIOUS AND FATAL TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS; AND DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO JARED W. PERDUE, P.E., SECRETARY OF FDOT AND DANIEL IGLESIAS, P.E., DISTRICT 6 SECRETARY OF FDOT. WHEREAS, Collins Avenue (Al A) in North Beach is a high -volume roadway running through residential and commercial areas, creating conditions that require heightened safety measures to protect pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists; and WHEREAS, the City has recently experienced serious traffic accidents on Collins Avenue, including a crash resulting in two fatalities, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced safety interventions along the corridor; and WHEREAS, residents, City staff, and elected officials have expressed concern that the combination of high traffic speeds and adjacent neighborhood activity poses an increased risk to public safety; and WHEREAS, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) oversees A1A—which in North Beach includes Collins Avenue and Harding Avenue/Abott Avenue from 68th Street to 87th Terrace, as well as 71 st Street —as part of the state roadway network and has the authority to evaluate, design, and implement traffic -calming and safety improvements along the corridor; and WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission desire to formally urge FDOT to expeditiously assess and implement appropriate safety countermeasures to reduce speeding, improve pedestrian and cyclist protections, and prevent further loss of life. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City Commission hereby urge the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to evaluate and implement traffic calming or other safety measures along the A1A corridor (Collins Avenue and Harding Avenue/Abbott between 68th Street and 87th Terrace) and along 71 st Street in North Beach, in light of recent serious and fatal traffic accidents; and direct the City Clerk to transmit a copy of this resolution to Jared W.
