A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI
BEACH, FLORIDA, DIRECTING THE CITY ADMINISTRATION TO DEVELOP AND
IMPLEMENT A SUMMER SHADOWING PROGRAM, IN COLLABORATION WITH
THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH YOUTH COMMISSION, TO CREATE A ONE -WEEK
PILOT PROGRAM FOR SUMMER 2026.
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach is committed to fostering civic engagement, leadership
development, and career education for youth within the community; and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach Youth Commission has expressed that providing high
school students, particularly those entering or completing the 11th and 12th grades, with the
opportunity to shadow City staff and learn about municipal professions would be of significant value;
and
WHEREAS, exposure to municipal operations — including policy development, public safety,
legal services, planning, finance, public works, and other governmental functions — can inspire
students to consider careers in public service and strengthen the pipeline of future civic leaders; and
WHEREAS, a structured summer shadowing program would allow students to spend a day or
a full week at City Hall or other City facilities engaging with various departments, observing operations,
and gaining firsthand insight into the wide range of professions that support the City's functioning; and
WHEREAS, implementing a one -week pilot program during the summer of 2026 will allow the
City to assess student interest, operational feasibility, and departmental capacity while creating a
framework for potential future expansion; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission wish to support the Youth Commission's vision
and encourage the development of meaningful experiential learning opportunities for Miami Beach
teens.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City Commission hereby direct the City
Administration to develop and implement a Summer Shadowing Program, in collaboration with the
City of Miami Beach Youth Commission, and to create a one -week pilot program for implementation
during the summer of 2026.
