HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 2026-34350RESOLUTION NO.2026-34350 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH,FLORIDA,AUTHORIZING THE MIAMI-DADE COUNTY CANVASSING BOARD FOR THE NOVEMBER 3,2026 GENERAL ELECTION TO SERVE AS THE CANVASSING BOARD FOR THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH'S SPECIAL ELECTION TO BE HELD ON NOVEMBER 3,2026. WHEREAS,on November 3,2026,the Miami-Dade County Supervisor of Elections ("Supervisor of Elections")will be conducting the General Election,at which time the City of Miami Beach has authorized a Special Election to be held,to submit ballot questions to the electorate of the City of Miami Beach;and WHEREAS,the Supervisor of Elections is charged with the full responsibility of conducting the subject Election,except for accepting the Certificate of Election Results concerning the City of Miami Beach's Special Election,which duty is within the Miami Beach City Commission's purview;and WHEREAS,the Miami-Dade County Canvassing Board for the Countywide November 3, 2026 General Election is charged with the statutory responsibilities relating to the conduct of the subject Election and is hereby further authorized to act consistently with said responsibilities as the Canvassing Board for the City of Miami Beach's November 3,2026 Special Election. NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH,FLORIDA,that the Miami-Dade County Canvassing Board for the November 3,2026 General Election is hereby authorized to serve as the Canvassing Board for the City of Miami Beach's November 3,2026 Special Election. RECOMMENDATION The Office of the City Clerk recommends that the Mayor and City Commission adopt the attached resolution authorizing the Miami-Dade County Canvassing Board to serve as the Canvassing Board for the City's November 3,2026 Special Election,if a Special Election is called through approval of the proposed ballot question(s)on the July 22,2026 agenda. BACKGROUND/HISTORY ANALYSIS The Miami-Dade County Supervisor of Elections will conduct the Countywide General Election on November 3,2026.The City has also placed proposed ballot questions on the July 22,2026, agenda for potential inclusion on a Special Election ballot to be held concurrently.If the City Commission approves one or more ballot questions and a Special Election is called,the proposed resolution authorizes the Miami-Dade County Canvassing Board,already responsible for canvassing the Countywide General Election,to also serve as the Canvassing Board for the City's Special Election. FISCAL IMPACT STATEMENT The Miami-Dade County Supervisor of Elections has provided an estimated cost of $25,520.00 for its services (see Exhibit A).Please note that these figures are estimates and may change without prior notice.If the City's ballot question(s)require additional ballot pages,the costs will be adjusted accordingly. FINANCIAL INFORMATION CONCLUSION This resolution authorizes the Miami-Dade County Canvassing Board to serve as the Canvassing Board for the City's Special Election on November 3,2026,if one is called.Under Florida's election procedures,when a municipality holds a Special Election concurrently with a Countywide election,the County Canvassing Board is responsible for canvassing all returns.Accordingly,this resolution ensures the City complies with State requirements and follows established best practices for election administration.
