..,
During the last seven years, I have had the privilege of serving the residents of Miami Beach as
City Commissioner. Being on the Commission has been a rewarding experience as we tackled a
great number of issues to improve our City. We introduced the International Baccalaureate
program to Miami Beach's schools, raised the ethical standards of our government, created
Florida's first hybrid vehicle parking incentive program and built new pools, parks and a youth
center.
I have had the opportunity to learn from our community and to hear from residents regarding the
issues they care so deeply about. Many residents have shared stories with me on how they wish
we could chart a new course for our State.
The reality is our State is at the crossroads and millions of Floridians are demanding change,
including our residents. After hearing from so many, I decided to declare my candidacy for State
House because I want to bring a strong voice to Tallahassee on behalf of the people of District
106.
There is so much that needs to be done, from strengthening our system of public education, to
achieving solutions that will stabilize the unaffordable property insurance market and improving
the quality and accessibility of healthcare. I have decided to run for the Florida House of
Representatives so I can advocate and fight for these, and many more issues on the minds of my
constituents.
Therefore, pursuant to Florida Statute Section 99.012 and our City's long standing
precedent, most recently demonstrated by Commissioner Luis Garcia who resigned to
successfully run for State Representative, Thereby submit this letter of resignation, effective
November 4, 2008.
Our State leaders have much work to do and it is my sincere hope that I will continue to serve the
residents of Miami Beach and District 106 in Tallahassee. I want to thank the residents of Miami
Beach for their trust and confidence in me. I look forward to continuing to serve them in
Tallahassee.
Sincerely,
Richard L. Steinberg, Commissioner
