notesOne of the most basic patchwork patterns is the checkerboard,
consisting of two alternating fabrics, usually a light and a dark.
Two easy blocks made with this technique are Four Patch and
Nine Patch.
Four Patch
• Cut strips half the width of the
desired block, plus :" (the two :"
seam allowances). Cut one strip
from light fabric, the other from
dark.
• Stitch strips together along one
long side. Press scam allowances ,a,
toward the darker fahric.
• Cut the pieced strip into units
the same width as the original `
strip (finished width plus="). ~ ~~~ ~;;;,
• Stitch units together, matching seams. alternating `'• '
light and dark units to form the Four Patch pattern.
Tip: Since both seam allowances are pressed ' `'1`

Mosaic Piecing -Squares
Speed Piecing -Many traditional quill patterns are made of half-
square and quarter-square triangles. These two units are easily
speed-pieced using Patchwork Foot #37 or Patchwork Foot with
Guide #57. The blocks shown at right are just a sampling of the
patterns that start as half-square and quarter-square triangles.
Half-Square Triangles
• Cut two contrasting squares ~' larger than the desired sire of
the finished block. (The extra 'i' provides '-" scam allowances on
the resultingy half-square triangle blocks.)
• Draw a diagonal line on the back of ane

together. With Patchwork Foot 1f37, stitch
