Re: Art in Public Places Committee
Dear Mayor Bower and Commissioners:
I respectfully request appointment to the Art in Public Places Committee of the City of Miami
Beach.
I have been a resident of this great city since 1989 and my firm provides various real estate
services, including brokerage, development, construction and management. However, I focus
my efforts on historic preservation and specialize in the renovation of historic buildings.
Since my arrival to Miami Beach, I have been involved in the rescue and renovation of some of
its historic structures. Working with Chris Blackwell and Dacra Companies, I oversaw the
renovation of The Marlin, The Cavalier, The Leslie, The Molinar and Splendor, The Netherland
and The Tides. These great buildings continue to contribute to the beauty and history of the
city.
As Assistant Director of Vizcaya Museum & Gardens, I was responsible for the renovation of the
estate of James Deering, including air conditioning the main house and enclosing the courtyard
with a unique and controversial "dome ". The Museum also hosted traveling exhibits, maintained
its own conservation labatory, and we hosted an annual "international art fair" with 150 artists in
attendance throughout the formal gardens.
And most currently, I completed the renovation of the historic Sovereign Hotel, which induded
the addition of a new 15 -story tower. The facility is now home to the exclusive Soho Beach
House, a private club and spa, and boutique hotel.
Hopefully you will agree that my experience qualifies me to sit on the Art in Public Places
Committee. I certainly would like to contribute my time and experience to the committee and
the city. Thanks for your consideration.
Sinc rely,
Jame yd

Mr. Lloyd has been active in the development, construction, and management of real estate in
South Florida since 1975.
Upon graduation from the University of Miami, Mr. Uoyd was appointed Capital Improvements
Coordinator for the Miami -Dade Parks Department. As such, he was responsible for overseeing
over 100 million dollars earmarked for development and construction of park and recreational
facilities. His diverse projects included the construction of the acclaimed Miami Metro Zoo, a 300 -
acre, cage -less animal habitat; Tropical Park, a 280 -acre park and equestrian center; and the
renovation of Miami -Dade County Auditorium, a 2000 seat venue hosting operatic and ballet
series.
Shortly thereafter Mr. Uoyd became Assistant Director of the historic landmark, Vizcaya Museum
and Gardens. During his tenure, he coordinated the total renovation of this 60 room 16 century
style Italian villa located on Miami's Biscayne Bay, built by industrialist James Deering in 1925.
This intricate and innovative renovation involved several challenges such as air conditioning the
main house, and enclosing the loggias and open courtyard with a glass dome structure, while
preserving the architectural integrity of the villa.
After departing Vizcaya, Mr. Uoyd was named President of Franklin Realty Group of Florida, a
subsidiary of Franklin Realty Group of Pennsylvania, the second largest syndicator of real estate
in the United States during the mid 80's. Mr. Uoyd developed, constructed, and leased over 500
million dollars worth of real estate, throughout Florida. These properties included office towers,
shopping centers and large residential apartment complexes. His tenants included IBM Latin
America, Texaco Latin America, and Citi Bank.
By 1990 Mr. Lloyd joined with Chris Blackwell, founder of Island Records and former president of
Polygram Entertainment, to renovate seven historic hotels in South Beach. These included the
renowned Tides Hotel, originally a 114 room structure, reconfigured to accommodate 45 rooms,
each one overlooking the Ocean. The Marlin Hotel, including a state of the art sound studio
where artists such as Julio Iglesias, Mick Jagger and Aerosmith have recorded. These
renovations have set the standard for historic renovation in South Beach and received many
accolades from preservationists as well as hotel guests.
For the past two years, Mr. Uoyd has represented the owners of Soho House, a London based
hospitality firm, in the development and construction of Soho Beach House, Miami Beach. This
project involves the renovation of an historic hotel, the Sovereign, with the addition of a new 15-
story tower. The 45 room boutique hotel and private club includes a luxury spa, 2 restaurants, a
100 foot in -ground pool and a roof top pool. Project cost in excess of 100 million dollars.
Mr. Uoyd's clients include: JP Morgan, Banco Santander, Cisneros Group Latin America, WP
Carey, Ryder Properties, Las Vegas Land Partners, Wind Point Partners, Kipton Hotels, Kor Hotel
Group, Soho House Hospitality Group and Chris Blackwell.
