EDUCATION Bachelor of Science in Management New York University, New York, New York Master of Library Science Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, New York Personal Biography Christine Florez Christine Florez is a leader in her community having founded the West Avenue Corridor Neighborhood Association in January 2012. WAvNA advocates for the interests of a diverse community bounded by 51" Street north to 17t" Street and from the west side of Alton Road to the Bay. The community is home to near) residents y 10 000 r es de is and a number of businesses in one of the most densely populated areas on the east coast. The Corridor is a highly pedestrian/bike friendly urban y neighborhood that represents some of the best living options on Miami Beach. In addition, Christine is a Board member of Miami Beach United (MBU). Through MBU, Christine has recently been involved in efforts to change the City Charter to include formal recognition of neighborhood associations and to strengthen resident rights. Christine's professional experience centers in public relations research. She holds a Master's degree in library science from Pratt University and an undergraduate degree in business from New York University. Her professional experience includes management, analysis, primary and secondary research and demographic profiling. Christine worked for top-tier firms in public relations and management consulting including Burson-Marsteller, when it was headed by Harold Burson, considered to be the father of public relations, Accenture, formerly Andersen Consulting, and Bain & Company. In addition, she worked for NBC on the news programs The Today Show and Weekend Nightly News. The demanding work environments instilled a high degree of professionalism; standards for work product; customer service; and diligence in follow through. She managed a research department with a budget in excess of $600K with a separate research database expense of over $1 million. Her management efforts have resulted in more efficient department collaboration, responsive customer service, cost savings and increased training. Other experience includes working on media outreach programs for national brands. Through WAvNA, to advocate for resident and business needs, Christine engaged in capacity building that focused on the community's assets with fact-based analysis. WAvNA's capacity building efforts included: • Using research, photography, articles and social activities to create an ongoing narrative of our community's strengths. • Increasing membership from the original two to a mailing list of over 1,000 names. • Defining strategy for zoning changes to encourage development reflective of the community's changed demographics - younger and mostly year-round resident population than in previous years. • Establishing different opportunities for engaging stakeholders, including neighborhood social activities, to build a sense of community. • Educating members and other stakeholders about government and City programs, master plans, strategies and funding methods. • Using cost-effective tools, data and services as basis for decision-making and outreach. • Using demographic research to profile the community's residents that reflects the true personality of the neighborhood rather than perceptions based on historical notions of the population. Christine made Miami Beach her permanent residence in 2008. Christine lived in New York City for over thirty years but she visited frequently after her mother retired almost 20 years ago to South Beach. Though not as concrete, her ties to the community extend further back as she and her family spent much time traveling to South Florida for vacation and other reasons for many years. Her paternal grandfather, Juan Florez, came to Miami from Cuba via Key West in 1910. Soon after, his family moved to New York City.
