NRDA , ealeputyrchitect 1446 Jefferson Avenue Miami Beach. FL 33139 305-467-4026 To City of Miami Beach Date: 01 December, 2014 1700 Convention Center Drive Miami Beach, FL 33139 Re: Historic Preservation Board Application To Whom it may concern, I was delighted to receive a call from Daniel Ciraldo at the Miami Design Preservation League last week. Daniel told him that I would love to. It would be an honor. I welcome the opportunity to serve the community that means so much to me and my family. My passion for architecture began in 1978 when, as a teenager, I visited South Beach. The combination of faded pastels, deco garden apartments, and sand in the streets painted a vivid picture of sun-faded glory and the poetics of abandonment. The verve and cohesiveness of the Art Deco district struck a chord that still resonates today. I moved to South Beach in 1994, following completion of my graduate work in Architecture. It has been my home ever since. I pulled my first permit for preservation work for the Miami Beach Community Church in 1995. I have played a variety of roles in the intervening years- architect, designer, developer, broker, inspector, property manager- both locally and afar. This breadth of experience and perspective would be an asset to the Board. My early interests in preservation largely stem from growin- Charlottesville, kitchen window University culminated in a year of study in Venice, Italy, sponsored by the Guggenheim Foundation, to further my understanding of mediaeval Italian Town Planning. The work product from this year was largely responsible for the receipt of a full merit scholarship to pursue Graduate Studies at Princeton University. I believe that the role and goal of historic preservation is to manage necessary change in a balanced manner. Although new construction has occupied the bulk of my professional practice, I have cherished my involvement in preservation and repurposing projects. I have done such work in historic areas including Charlottesville, New Haven, Chicago, Barboursville, Venice, Princeton, Staunton, Washington DC, & Miami Beach. Some of the projects that I am most proud of involved the adaptive reuse or reinvention of obsolete building types and reinvigorating historic sites. These are all included in the attached curriculum vitae but some closest to my heart include: The Cistern, New Haven, CT (1994) In the late 1800s the town of New Haven was served by a 495,000 gallon above ground concrete water tower. The reinvention and repurposing of this structure into a private residence was featured in both Architectural Record and House Beautiful. The Miami Beach Community Church , Miami Beach, FL (1995) I began my work at the Church on Lincoln Road with the preparation of a 20 year master plan addressing and prioritizing all aspects of the restoration and maintenance of this landmark institution. I also spearheaded three separate capital campaigns that ultimately procured over $1.5M to pay for the renovations. In 2010, the master plan was roughly 90% complete and I was named Architect Emeritus of the Miami Beach Community Church in recognition of the work achieved over 15 years. The Coca-Cola Bottling Works , Charlottesville, VA (1997) This project involved the adaptive reuse of nearly everything within the abandoned warehouse including freight r elevators, lift motors, salvaged steel and wood framinginterior light monitors built from salvaged factory windows, subway tile from sanitary rooms, antique plumbing, electric fixtures, door hardware, etc. The city was neighborhood. The project was also widely published. The YardBird , Charlottesville, VA (2000) The Yardbird is a backyard studio constructed almost entirely from salvaged materials- from prefabricated building kits. The design theme was thus dictated by the materials at hand rather than the reverse which is typically the case. The Yardbird was published in Architectural Record, Dwell Magazine, PREFAB, and Private Towers. 520 Lincoln Road , Miami Beach, FL (2002) This small 450 SF apartment, originally designed by Russell Pancoast, once served as the parsonage for the Miami Beach Community Church. Years of neglect had produced the typical decay associated with coastal climates. I restored the apartment at my own expense as an income producing gift to the church. The project was featured on HGTV, and published in Dream Apartments, Miami Modern, and Abode. r The Love Nests Apartments Charlottesville, VA (2005) The largest challenge in this project was convincing the developer that retaining the original early 20C structures and preserving them would produce leasable space that would be more stylish, more attractive, more economical, and thus more profitable, than building new. The resulting loft style apartments and ground floor retail spaces in the heart of downtown Charlottesville have never had a vacancy that was not filled virtually overnight. he Oakhurst Inn T, Charlottesville, VA (2014) This recently completed project involved the restoration of four adjacent rooming houses and their reinvention as a Bed & Breakfast Inn. The property is adjacent to a UNESCO World Heritage Site (The Lawn at the University of Virginia) and sits in local, state, and national historic districts. The Villa Gala, Miami Beach, FL (2014) The recent acquisition of the Villa Gala at 1446 Jefferson Avenue ensures my ongoing contribution to the preservation of historic architecture in Miami Beach. I look forward to the restoration of this circa 1929 residence and raising my family there. It is an honor to play the role of steward to one of these fine structures and a privilege to be counted as a resident of the Flamingo Park Historic District. In closing I would like to thank the Mayor and the Commissioners for considering my application. Having appeared before the Board in the past I am aware of the gravity and responsibility that the post entails and I pledge to make it a priority for the duration of my tenure. I look forward to your favorable response. Very truly yours Neal Deputy Neal R. Deputy, Architect AR0015514 .
