Staff currently attends various community meetings, neighborhood/business association meetings, Mayor on the Move meetings, as well as organizes community meetings to solicit feedback on various projects including CIP related work. Requests for staff to attend Commission organized meetings have begun to increase. In order to be responsive to Commission needs while managing staff time, I would like to establish a policy or guidelines for staff requested attendance at these meetings. Therefore, I am requesting a referral to the Committee of the Whole meeting to discuss this subject. I am available if you should have any questions. Thank you again for your time and assistance, Leslie Motions: The Committee for Quality Education requests the Mayor and Commission strongly support the Miami-Dade County Public School1.2 Billion Bond Referendum, scheduled for a vote in October/November 2012. Seconded by Heller The Committee for Quality Education requests the Mayor and Commission continue to support and fund the school agenda books for the children of the Miami Beach schools, including Treasure Island. Made by Heller. Seconded by Borrello. The health and well-being of our children is of paramount importance and should be considered a community priority and responsibility. Therefore, the Committee for Quality Education recommends that the Mayor and City Commission review the Health and Well-being activities in the Education Compact to strengthen them and consider funding support. The Committee for Quality Education requests the Mayor and Commission strongly support the implementation of foreign language classes for high school credit at Nautilus Middle School and Fienberg-Fisher K-8 Center comparable to every other IB MYP school in Miami-Dade County Public Schools. The intent of this request is to allow children at both schools the opportunity to obtain high school credit in a foreign language class while in middle school, with the option of taking an Advanced Placement class by the 8th grade year. Implementation would be as follows: • 2012-13 school year-foreign language high school credit Ieveil • 2013-14 school year-foreign language high school credit Ieveil and @! • 2014-15 school year-foreign language advanced placement class high school and college credit Made by Heller. The Committee for Quality Education requests the Mayor and Commission support the research and recommendations presented by the Safety sub-committee to extend the school safety zone at Nautilus Middle School to include 41 51 Street from Meridian Avenue to Alton Road from 8:30a.m.-9:10a.m. and 3:50p.m.-4:15 p.m. within the 2012-13 school year. Additional suggestions to consider include: • Install a prepare to stop sign at Meridian in anticipation of the requested crosswalk at N. Jefferson Avenue • Perhaps change N. Jefferson Avenue to one-way southbound • Use flasher (red & yellow) on bridge heading west • Perhaps change Garden Avenue to one-way southbound • Use flasher (red & yellow) on bridge heading west Made by Heller.
