RE: Interest in serving on City of Miami Beach Sustainability Committee
Hello, I am keenly interested in contributing to our City’s sustainability and environment. I was born on Miami Beach,
have resided here for the last 29 years and raised two daughters here - they returned right after graduating college.
For my daughters’ sake and the ongoing health & economic vitality of our great City, we must remain vigilant and
innovative in protecting and sustaining our beautiful land and marine ecosystems while balancing the needs of our
residents and the hundreds of thousands who visit each year.
As a surfer, paddler and ocean sportsman, I bring a valuable set of eyes & ears to our wonderful beaches and
waterways. Without these attributes, Miami Beach would not be the world-class destination it has become.
Community/Environmental activist accomplishments:
* Surfrider Foundation Miami volunteer board member (Chair, Treasurer, and Executive Member at-large) (2008-
current) defending and advocating for the protection of and access to the Miami Beach coastal environment including
leadership involvement in:
- Core member of Dune restoration program in partnership with City of Miami Beach where residents & visitors engage
as volunteers to restore dune habitat and learn about our City’s coastal ecology;
- Initiated North Beach Bandshell Zero Waste Campaign working with CMB & Rhythm Foundation to reduce single use
plastics, increase recycling rates and educate patrons on sustainability practices for their homes & businesses;
- Lobbied, presented, and supported Polystyrene foam ban efforts in both Miami Beach and Miami-Dade County to
eliminate these destructive disposables from our waterways
- Coordinated Hands Across the Sand with other NGO’s to engage and gather hundreds of people to form a human chain
on the beach (every year since Feb 2010 BEFORE the BP oil spill) to protest against the threat of offshore oil drilling and
advocate for clean, renewable energy;
- Lobbying of lawmakers in DC, Tallahassee, Miami-Dade & Miami Beach to advocate for ocean/coastal recreation areas;
- Initiation of Blue Water Task Force beach water testing program to monitor for & report unsafe swimming conditions;
- Speaking at City and County commission meetings and public hearings on behalf of clean water & healthy beaches;
- Presented to school groups about coastal ecosystems and the link between consumer habits and ecosystem impact.
