Founding Director Karen Fryd began providing school supplies directly to children in 1999, after visiting Fredrick Douglass Elementary in Overtown. There, a teacher told her that many children could not do their homework because they did not have even basic supplies. Together with school resource officers and neighborhood officers from the City of Miami Police Department, Ms. Fryd identified specific needs, such as uniforms, sweaters, shoes, socks, and books, the lack of which were preventing children from successfully completing their school year. In addition, Ms. Fryd, through the South Florida Youth Foundation, has sponsored turkey drives, Christmas toy drives (over 1,500 toys), targeted programming in inner city schools, such as Youth Crime Patrol Watch, sponsored teams — YMCA at Holmes Elementary, Summer Camp for foster children, a garden at Dunbar Elementary, Turners Kindergarten, PTA Programs, and provided band uniforms for Fredrick Douglass Elementary. Through the efforts of Ms. Fryd and the Foundation, more than 20,000 articles of brand new clothing, donated computers, and some 12,000 backpacks with supplies inside have been distributed. In addition, Ms. Fryd has sponsored Christmas parties at the New Horizons Senior Center in Liberty City. "My inspiration has always been the wonderful children, the dedicated teachers, and the police department with their dedicated work to better the lives of children with prevention programs," stated Karen Fryd. "All this is possible through their work and that of friends and volunteers who have helped me with their hard work and generous contributions", she said. Headquarters for the South Florida Youth Foundation is on Miami Beach. Overhead is zero, and 100% of all contributions go to work to help children and their communities. 1708 WEST 25TH STREET, WWI BEACH[, FL 33140 TEL: 305-534-3899 FAX: 305-534-1165 ;enter org
