Name of Deputy Clerk Control No. Date
As a resident of Miami Beach over the past twenty years, I have experienced its evolution, garnered extensive,
long standing relationships with community members from diverse cultural, socio-economic and industry -related
backgrounds, and developed a strong love for this city. I would value the opportunity to use my knowledge and
experience as a resident and professional to serve Miami Beach.
As a resident, I first moved to the beach over 20 years ago as a single, struggling young professional who
supplemented her income by picking up shifts at various restaurants and bars. As time has passed, I no longer
need to supplement my income and have gained a family. We have chosen to raise our son, who has
developmental delays, in South Beach in our current home where we have resided over ten years. He is enrolled
in one of the public elementary schools (thank you MB for the IB!) and participates in the Parks and Recreation
Aftercare program. We don't just reside here, we live here — the parks, the beaches, the tennis centers, the
swimming pools, the myriad of recreational classes and summer camps, the golf course, the Miami Beach
Botanical Gardens (married there!), and the list goes on. For me, now that I have time to commit to serving, it is
important to give back to this city that gives so much for us.
As a professional, I have experience and skills that would be an asset in service to the city. At present, I am Lead
Agency Counsel for a mid-sized non-profit that serves as a sub -recipient to the State of Florida for the
privatization of child welfare services. The organization has both non-profit and benefit subsidiaries, over 450
employees and receives over 100 million in state and federal monies each year. In this capacity, I serve a few
different roles and have garnered skills that I think would provide great value to the city:
Compliance counsel creating a compliance infrastructure and overseeing the policy & procedure
framework, drafting revision; code of conduct and ethics; Certified as Compliance and Ethics Professional
(CCEP), as well as a Florida Bar Diversity Trainer
Legal advisor on issues related to human resources (inclusive of EEOC, ADA, OSHA, etc.) and related
investigations, to include providing leadership over HR during times of personnel transition; drafting and
revisions employee handbook
Corporate secretary providing counsel and procedural guidance to board of directors, to include
compliance with Florida Sunshine regulations, given requirement to comply with Sunshine
Legal advisor to technology subsidiary engaged in the development of applications, ERM and SaaS, to
include assistance related to patent, trademark and copyright
Legislative/Agency engagement from serving as liaison to participating in development of administrative
code and operating procedures to creating white papers
Extensive project management experience involving stakeholders, internal and external, across
departmental and functionality lines; Certified as a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt
An extensive understanding of social welfare issues and the related issues from resources to grants to
limitations on funding streams (restricted v. unrestricted monies). Prior to my current position, I spent
over 7 years navigating social welfare issues in Miami (both for a non-profit in Little Haiti and as a Civil
Prosecutor for the State). At present, I maintain a working knowledge of the social welfare systems in
Miami -Dade.
Thank you for your consideration. I look forward further discussing how I can serve Miami Beach.
Best,
Christine A. Butler JD, CCEP
