PARK BUSES AT-THE SCOTT RAKOW YOUTH CENTER
Historically, the Parks Department has parked vehicles used for transporting children in the
recreation program at the Scott Rakow Youth Center. Until recently, smaller vans were
utilized by the Parks Department. In this last year, the Department acquired several full
size yellow school buses consistent with a State requirement for transport of children.
The new vehicles are significantly larger than the previous transport vans and as such are
apparently more visible to adjoining or passing residents. Even though the vehicles are
now more noticeable, they have historically been parked at the Scott Rakow Youth Center.
Operationally, the drivers of the vehicles and the large number of children transported by
the vehicles come and go from the Scott Rakow Youth Center. As such, moving the
vehicles to another location would introduce operational inefficiencies associated with
traveling to the vehicles and returning to the vehicles that are not now experienced.
In addition to operational difficulties, there is the necessity of finding a physical location to
house the vehicles if they are to be moved from the Scott Rakow Youth Center. The
vehicles will not fit in our existing parking structures and to place them in other surface
parking would of course displace other vehicles from these locations.
When the North Shore Park is completed, two of the vehicles that serve that park and are
temporarily located at Scott Rakow will be returned to North Shore Park. This will assist in
alleviating the issue.
