Raised in Edina, Minnesota, a suburb of Minneapolis, I
graduated from high school there in 1967, obtained by B.A. in
English from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio in 1971 and my
J.D. in law from Southern Methodist University in Dallas in
1974. After a 3 year stint in private practice, I joined S&A
Restaurant Corp (Steak and Ale) where I was employed from
1977-1989 as Executive Vice President, General Counsel and
Secretary. I became Senior Vice President, General Counsel and
Secretary at Burger King Corporation from 1989-1993, and then
Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary at
Brinker International, Inc. (Chili’s and Maggiano’s among other
restaurant chains) from 1993 until my retirement in June of
2016.
I am married to Jim Tyrrell, having been married on January 1,
2016. I have served on the Board of Directors of the National
LGBTQ Task Force (the organization that produces the Miami
Gala and Winter Party Festival here in Miami Beach) for 7 years,
and anticipate serving for several more years. While on the
Board of the Task Force, I was Co-Chair for 2 years and
Treasurer for 3.
Additionally, I have also been active with Pridelines, SAVE,
SAGE, The Outshine Film Festival, OUT Miami Foundation, Aqua
Foundation and several organizations we support, and I was
recently honored by the Miami-Dade Gay and Lesbian Chamber
of Commerce with the Bob Balsam Civic Achievement Award. I
am also a member of the GLBT Community Project Fund – an
arm of the Miami Foundation – which makes grants to
organizations focused on the LGBTQ community.
