Some Things About Victoria
A graduate of the Columbia School of Journalism and an award-winning
journalist, Victoria Pesce Elliott was a restaurant critic and food writer for The
Miami Herald for the last 18 years.
Previously, she worked for The New York Times as a full-time stringer in the
Miami/Caribbean Bureau. She has authored more than a dozen travel books,
including Frommer’s Guide to Miami & The Keys as well as Knopf’s Miami series.
Her work has also appeared in Bon Appétit, Shape, Saveur, Ocean Drive, Poder,
Wine & Spirits, Cooking Light, Wines From Spain, American Way, New Times,
Executive Travel, New York Magazine, Vogue, and Food & Wine.
For ten years, she edited the Miami ZAGATSURVEY guides for South Florida.
A Miami native, she was inspired by growing up in a second-generation
immigrant family from Puglia, in the heel of the Italian boot. Her parents were not
only food lovers, but also great theater and music supporters at a time when
Miami had very little of either.
They were founding members of the Miami Film Festival and the Florida Grand
opera as well as die-hard fans of all local theater. So, the whole family enjoyed
early exposure to culture and travel. She has traveled to more than 40 countries.
She and her husband Eric have an apartment in New York’s West village and
keep up on theater, dance, and art events there. Both her brothers worked as
professional musicians before launching careers in film and education.
As a teen, Victoria danced in London at the Royal Academy of Ballet. Then two
decades later became a dance mom who home-schooled daughter Rosie, a
nationally ranked contemporary dancer.
She has been seen-- in disguise, of course-- on Bravo’s hit Top Chef and After
Hours with Daniel Boulud and does periodic on-air radio stints.
While living in New York, she worked at the New York Film Festival and as an
editor and script-reader for several production companies.
She sits on the prestigious Restaurant Review Committee of the James Beard
Foundation, the board that administers the awards for chefs and restaurants
around the country. Pesce-Elliott received her sommelier certificate in 2005 and
also happens to be a certified diesel mechanic. But that is another story.
Finding the solitude of writing a challenge, Elliott started a writer’s group called
Women on The Verge in the mid 1990’s that remains active today. Members are
from all over the world. Being from Miami, she is comfortable speaking Spanish.
With some practice and a few glasses of wine, she can also get her very rusty
Italian polished up.
Other professional affiliations include Theatre Development Fund, Les Dames
d’Escoffier, The American Institute of Wine and Food, The James Beard
Foundation, Association of Food Journalists, Slow Food, MENSA, American
Friends of Jamaica, and Guardia d'Onore del Pantheon.
She hosts frequent dinner parties and is currently working on a novel with
recipes.
