Hotel 0519, Summer 2019
A proposal for a boutique-hotel in Cancun, Mexico. The square plan contains
an interior courtyard and a side-yard populated by a grove of shade trees and
a relentless pool. Restaurant facilities are held in a crystal rectangle within
the courtyard whilst pavilions for relaxation and massages are distributed
throughout the exterior landscape. A tall white-wash wall separates the hotel
proper from the noise of the city.
Twitter Units, Summer 2019
In 1637, Rene Descartes published a method to locate a point in space within
an imaginary grid of X-Y-Z orthographic coordinates; his invention
revolutionized mathematics and created a link between Euclidian geometry
and algebra. This system of Cartesian Coordinates was implemented by
Thomas Jefferson at a regional level with his Land Survey Ordinance of
1785. The Ordinance served to locate and measure rural and urban real estate
in the new American territories – a system which replaced the old quilt of
metes-and-bounds with the impeccable scientific rationality of the
enlightenment. Before Descartes, and with a few exceptions, the pre-
enlightenment man used his body, or his sensual perceptions, as the most
reliable structure of measurement. In the post-digital era, the length of a
digital message is restricted to no more than 280 characters – known as a
tweet (equivalent to approximately 24 inches). But, could a tweet be used as
a unit of regional measurement? If so, what would be its equivalents in the
English and Metric systems? This project is an inventive philosophical
contribution to this discussion. TWEET-TWEET-TWEET; may a tweet
become the preferred unit of post-digital measurement.
Bathroon Exhibit (a proposal), Summer 2019
With: Veruzka Vasconez
A description of a variety of architect’s recollections of their first encounter
with a bathroom experience. These texts will be transformed into a 3-D
model by a neutral author whose information is limited to the architect’s
written statements of 500 words or less. Our intervention includes a
description of an immersion bath in Medellin, Colombia.
House, Spring 2019
Two colossal polycarbonate houses glowing in a City of Coral Gables site. The
most elemental archetype of the American house is represented on a plot of
land surrounded by a perimeter wall. A common central yard and a rear pool
with independent bar-b-cue ovens complete this naïve composition.
Cube Apartments, Spring 2019
According to a report by Climate Central and Zillow, “by 2050, more than
386,000 existing homes in U.S. coastal areas are likely to be at risk of
permanent inundation from sea level rise alone”. This mixed-use proposal is
an alternative for residents who may choose to stay within affected urban
areas in the City of Miami in spite of the potential displacements and
Jaime Correa
Resume - Page 15 of 72
disruptions that will be caused by this modern day climate phenomenon. The
project is located adjacent to the Little River area – an existing industrial
district along two of the most important railroad track spurs; it consists of
seven mixed-use blocks accommodating about 12,000 residents and providing
one oversized public space for the delight of locals and four semi-public
courtyards for the enjoyment of residents on each block
Nine Ziggurats, Spring 2019
An exploration on the notion of seriality in art and architecture. A serial
repetition of objects in space is necessarily the most minimal interpretation of
the dynamics of temporal passage - particularly when it refers to the
metaphysical notions of identity and change. The full significance of these
nine ziggurats emerges when the serial logic is fully grasped as a progressive
tension between the parts and the whole – understood as the contingent sum
of compositional units. What emerges is a type of dynamic and open-ended
Gestalt marked by the relation between the unity, the series, the whole, and
the process which calculated the confluences and divergences between the
various objects.
Four Concrete Poems, Spring 2019
An imaginary depiction of four different urban realities. The act of poetry is
clearly most ancient than the discourse on poetry; history reveals that the
poem has always belonged to a more primal theurgical or ritual function.
These four concrete poems should be read as a conscious return to the
Calligrammes of Apollinaire, the permutational poems of the Jewish
cabalists, the graphics of the tail's mouse in the wonderland of Carroll,
the poetry of George Perec, the anagrams of the early Christian monks, the
carmina figurata of the Bubolic poets in Greece, etc. They are presented in the
same futurist spirit of Marinetti and as a contemporary apology to the early
disappearance of the Noigandres poets of Sao Paulo. A concrete poem is
nothing but a visual poem with or without a linguistic syntax.
A Contemporary Chinese Village, Fall 2018
The re-utilization of the traditional Cantonese village and/or the
appropriation of its morpho-typological values as a means for the production
of a contemporary city have become some of the greatest historic
preservation challenges in the China of the new millennium. This proposal
uses the Cantonese village archetype as a point of departure and challenges
its various expressions to attain a new kind of modernity.
Black Box Exhibition Center, Fall 2018
A new gallery and exhibition center located at the courtyard of the
Department of Architecture of Zhuhai College of Jilin University, in China.
This simple 6X6 square meters black metallic cube brings light into a purely
white interior through 3 translucid polycarbonate skylights reminiscent of
the archetypal “People’s House” in the Cantonese Region. The “almost
nothing” expression of this black cube is violated by an oblique sign
revealing the name of the project.
Chinatown: a Chinese calligraphy project, Fall 2018
This New Town proposal uses Wang Wei’s Chinese poem from the Tang
Dynasty as its point of departure for a master plan in one of the newest
sections of Zhuhai City – located in the Guangdong Province of the Pearl
River Delta (Poem supplied by: Professor Yan Wentao).

Chapel at the Intersection: a religious building at the Mexican border, Spring
2018
Commissioned by the Unity Church, this is a building at the Mexican
boundary between San Diego and Tijuana. Two independent halls, one on
the Mexican side and one on the American Side, serve communities on both
sides of the border.
Brickell Underline Pavilion, Fall 2017
A 20 ft. X 20 ft. ephemeral installation for the Miami Foudation and the
Friends of the Underline. Exhibited and built during Art Basel in Miami.
Design Team: Cristina Canton, Jaime Correa, Adib Cure, Steven Fett, Carie
Penabad, Elie Mehreb, Bernardo Rievling, and Qiazi Chen.
“El Norte”: a new addition to the School of Architecture, Fall 2017
The School of Architecture of the University of Miami has engaged a
professional firm to produce alternatives for the expansion and completion of
existing necessities. This proposal radicalizes the programmatic solutions
with the configuration of one single linear building facing the “true north” of
the university campus and intersecting every existing building in the school
proper. This solution defines discrete courtyard spaces, creates opportunities
for monuments to honorary donors, and supplies a floating deck on the
existing lake for special public relations programs.
Center for Contemporary Stoic Studies, Summer 2017
A rural office block will become the epicenter of contemporary stoicism in
America. This minimalistic labyrinth of Stoas composes a series of private
and public spaces to produce new knowledge and criticism of historic
philosophical texts. The iconography of the pyramid, the Hellenistic cover
market (Stoa), the American green, and the rationality of the repetitious cells
(the archetypal figure of the office building) are the main typological
references of the project.
Underline Pavilion Alternatives, Summer 2017
Three 24 ft. X 24 ft. ephemeral installations for James Corner’s Field
Operations newest proposal in Miami-Dade County: a metaphor of sea-level-
rise in the Brickell area, the M-I-A-M-I letters on wheels, and the Church of
the Five Medusas.
Casandra’s Measurements, Summer 2017
Her prophecies always came true. One day, she broke her promise to get
sexual favors from Apollo in exchange for her prophetic gift and the gods
punish her with the curse of never being believed. From that moment on, she
could persuade no one of anything. She used her Roman Groma to measure
the Florida rising seas; the results were dismaying. Only Minerva and her
community of scientists believed her; everyone else considered her to be
insane. From that moment on, South Florida kept a solemn promise to build
a place without a future.
Sea-Level-Rise Memorial, Summer 2017
Located on Biscayne Park, in the City of Miami, this public space memorial
brings awareness on the most pressing environmental issues faced by coastal
communities around the globe. The project provides a public auditorium and
Jaime Correa
Resume - Page 17 of 72
a stage on what seems to be the rooftops of the archaeological remains of the
former city.
Puppet Theater, Spring 2017
A small theater contained within a Platonic cube and a colossal lantern
floating on a flat-bottomed barge. It is also an exploration of issues of
architectural phenomenology, theory, and symbolism in the visual language
of comics (an homage to Chris Ware’s Jimmy Corrigan: the smallest kid on
earth) Ten complete diametric views of the project provide a more-real-than-
real aesthetic concretization and an overall understanding of the ontology of
the architectural object. The project can also be read as a political paradox
where the primordial archetype of the Greek Senate building is combined
with the typology of a puppet theater. The whole composition is a
commentary on the role of architecture on the creation myth.
Adam’s House in Paradise, Spring 2017
The mimetic/evolutionary idea of the origins of architecture, as sponsored in
the writings of Vitruvius, Alberti, Laugier, and many more, is challenged and
provoked. In this project the origin of architecture is not the illusion of the
primitive hut but the rational capacity of the human mind to produce and
perceive abstracted objects in space.
Linear Block Archetype, Spring 2017
This is an architecture and urban design project for the densification of one
typical American block. Three building types, containing three-story
townhouses, generate a net density of 35 units to the acre. The project for
about 300-450 people has continuous benches along the facades, provides
three different public spaces within its content, and represents metal,
concrete, and wood housing archetypes with a sub-tropical twist. Each
building type houses a variety of plans to accommodate a diversity of family
and human conditions.
Cuatro Patios, Spring 2017
An affordable housing project composed of 24 attached residences.
Autonomous units, which may adapt and change over time, consist of basic
housing programs around four courtyards. The minimalist language of the
primordial asymmetrical gabled housing type is meant to express a return to
order as well as its potential for a multiplicity of iterative changes over time.
Red Carpet, Fall 2016
A quasi-temporary project for an award ceremony venue in the new city of
Miami. The building hybridizes its original program as a stoa market, open-
air theater, fashion catwalk, wedding pavilion, place of worship, and public
space; it proposes the potential stabilization and consumption of the exhibit
building as a permanent feature of the new city. The project becomes a
commentary on the real as well as on the potentiality of emergent typologies.
Alternative City, Fall 2016
The project proposes an alternative for the re-densification of a typical
American urban block by means of Micro Live/Work units placed on the
obsolete fire code gaps and edges of suburban lots. The formal result validates
the creation of a legible perimeter urban block composed of existing single-
family houses and proposed Micro-units. The generic value of this
Jaime Correa
Resume - Page 18 of 72
acupunctural/incremental approach makes it applicable in any
environmental condition.
The New Voisin, Fall 2016
An archipelago proposal to house the City of Miami citizens that will be
displaced by sea-level-rise. This is a contemporary retrofit proposal in the
spirit of the renaissance; nevertheless, it proposes an architecture of
autonomy in which residents can adapt their housing units in order to
produce a self-emergent use-object. The project questions the ethical
dialectics posed within the neoliberal city between use-value vs. exchange
value.
The Wall, Summer 2016
If there could be a real project for a wall between the United States and its
neighboring countries, this would be its counterproposal. This project focuses
on the capacity of architecture to understand and construct alternative
scenarios and narratives. It emphasizes the innate capacity of architectur3e
to reveal political ideas while advancing new tactics and global visions. “The
Wall” is an autonomous frame inhabited and easily changed by its multiple
users; a real monument representing the false lunatic propaganda of fear,
alienation, disenchantment, and latent racism.
Florida Refugee Camps, Summer 2016
A proposal to house the thousands of City of Miami inhabitants who would
be potentially displaced by sea-level-rise into five refugee camps located on
dry land. The plan rejects the notion of infinite urbanization and proposes a
limited political territory where elements of collective memory are no longer
associated with their original meaning because of their purposeful
hybridization. The housing units, initially based on the models of the
“Barceloneta Paradigm” and “Ludwig Hilberseimer’s Hochhausstadt”, are
deliberately designed for personal fluctuations and continuous evolution.
New Florida Palm Trees, Spring 2016
A counter-proposal to the anti-gravity “Raise or Raze” sea-level-rise
discourse. This project uses regional landscape metaphors to elevate five city
blocks 375 feet up on the air while providing an array of shared civic
functions at the base of the structures.
Three Ladies, Spring 2016
A corner live/work unit in Lake Flores, Florida. Facing a one-story
traditional Main Street, the building front is occupied by an ice-cream parlor
with a public “third space”. Three roommates share the common living
spaces of the housing component - voluptuous roof volumes express their

SHORT BIOGRAPHY
“As you sow, so shall you reap”
Jaime Correa is an Associate Professor in Practice and the
former Director of the Master in Urban Design at the
School of Architecture of the University of Miami (position
held from 1996 to 2014) where he was also the Knight
Professor in Community Building. In 2018, he was the
Visiting Professor at Zhuhai College of Jilin University, in
China. His paper practice of un-built projects explores the
intersection between architecture, art, philosophy, culture,
and urbanism.
He is one among the 14 architects and town planners that
launched the American New Urbanism movement, one of
its most important promoters, and one of its most
significant critics. From 2013-2017 he served as a Climate
Reality Mentor under the tutelage of former Vice-President
and Nobel Laureate Al Gore. His firm is engaged in a new
type of paper design practice of un-built projects focused
on: asceticism and voluntary simplicity; history of art,
architecture, and urban form; philosophy – including
aesthetics, epistemology, ethics, and metaphysics; the
human experience and the culture of the everyday - the
99% invisible; the usefulness of the useless; post-digital
representation; the creation of real estate value via
morpho-genetic and typological disruptions; climate
change; applications of chaos and complexity theory to
contemporary conditions; and, a critical approach to
generative codes, self-organization, and bottom-up
urbanism.
He has been the recipient of the MRED+U Faculty of the
Year Award, the Wooddrow W Wilkins Award for
Outstanding Teaching and the University of Miami
Excellence in Civic Engagement Award. He received the bi-
annual 2014 Charles A. Barrett Memorial Award, the
International Architect’s Day Award in Pachuca, Mexico,
the Florida AIA Urban Designer and Academic of the Year
Award, three John Nolen Awards (in collaboration with the
Treasure Coast Regional Planning, the University of
Miami, and the City of Delray Beach), the Public Works
Association Project of the Year (APAW), the 2014 Florida
Redevelopment Association’s Presidents Award, the
Florida Governor’s Point of Light Award, first prize at the
Salt Lake City Interrotta competition, four national CNU
urban design awards for his master plan collaborations, an
Honorable Mention at the Williamsburg competition, and
many more awards and recognitions.
He is the author of numerous academic articles and a book
chapters including a chapter on informalities in “Global
Perspectives in Heritage Conservation: expansive scopes,
plural engagements, empathetic approaches” published by
Routledge in February of 2019. He was the founding Chair
of Academic Papers for the Congress for the New
Urbanism, former member of the Board of Editors of
Cuadernos de Arquitectura y Urbanismo, in Mexico, and a
prolific blog writer. He is the author of a parody of the New
Urbanism (Seven Recipes for the New Urbanism), a report on
morpho-typology (Courtyard Houses: Mexican enclave, the
rule and the model), a small pamphlet for resilient living
(Self-sufficient Urbanism), and a series of guidelines for
affordable housing (Housing Finance Authority Design
Guidelines). He is also the editor of “Rome Now: Form-
Time-Space”, “Six Inch Squares of Rome” and the “Rione
Zine Series” – three publications documenting the work of
his highly praised Rome “Manifesto Seminars”.
He holds a Master in Architecture with a Certificate in
Urban Design as well as a Master in City Planning with a
Certificate in Historic Preservation from the University of
Pennsylvania, a Certificate in Classical Architecture and
Medieval Iconography from the University of Cambridge,
in England, and Bachelors in Architecture and Urbanism
from the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana, in Colombia.
He received a non-secular Ph.D. in Comparative Religions
and practices with a focus on Buddhism and Vedanta.
His sponsored research includes reconstitution work for the
Kellogg and Barr Foundations, the Dupont Foundation,
the Knight Foundation Project in Community Building,
the Miami Project, The Miami Foundation, Friends of the
Underline, the Housing Finance Authority in Miami-Dade
County, and a Canin Research Award recipient for the last
15 years.
His latest professional work has been published by Dezeen,
KooZA/rch, CAGE, the Act.of.Mapping, and many others,
including: research on post-digital representation, projects
on urban evacuation and adaptation, public space
interventions in the City of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea and the
City of Miami, the redevelopment of an Industrial District
in Miami, urban design advisory for the City of Coral
Gables, collaborations in Coral Springs, the North End in
West Palm Beach, Central and South America -including
advisory roles for the implementation of the new towns of
Cayala and El Naranjo in Guatemala and La Serena in
Chile, and the master planning and implementation of “The
Wave” - a 50,000 people new town in Muscat, Sultanate of
Oman, in collaboration with OBM International.
