As coronavirus spreads
across the U.S., people are
staying home and avoiding
non-essential activities in
the name of social dis-
tancing and flattening the
curve.
To help, many retailers
and restaurants have rolled
out home delivery along
with contactless options,
leaving food orders and
grocery deliveries on door
steps.
But for some, home de-
livery isn’t an option and at
some point you may need
to go to the grocery store to
stock up on food and sup-
plies. What can you do to
help protect yourself?
Try these tips for shop-
ping safely at the store
amid the COVID-19 out-
break:
SHOP DURING LESS
CROWDED TIMES
If possible, avoid going to
the grocery store during
busy times of day and don’t
go daily, Good House-
keeping reported. If you see
someone you know, nod or
wave from afar and avoid
hugs and handshakes.
Don’t know when your
grocery store is busy? Try
typing its name and loca-
tion into Google — a graph
may appear showing the
store’s busiest times, ac-
cording to Consumer Re-
ports.
TAKE ADVANTAGE OF
‘SENIOR HOURS’
In an effort to keep
crowds away, some stores
set aside time called “se-
nior hours” especially for
older shoppers who are at
higher risk of severe symp-
toms related to COVID-19.
The Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention
recognize people age 65
and older at higher risk for
severe illness.
Here are some of the
senior hours at stores
across South Florida:
A Publix:Shoppers ages
65 and older can shop at all
Publix grocery stores on
Tuesdays and Wednesdays
from 7-8 a.m. The stores’
pharmacies will also open
at 7 a.m. for seniors. Publix
has changed its hours and
is open from 8 a.m. to 8
p.m.
A Fresh Market: 8 a.m.
to 9 a.m., Monday through
Friday, for senior citizens
and others at risk.
A Sedano’s:7 a.m. to 8
a.m., for senior citizens
and others at-risk.
A Target:The first hour
of store opening each
Wednesday reserved for
“elderly and those with
underlying health con-
cerns.” Check your Target
location.
A Whole Foods:One
hour before store opening
for customers 60 or older.
Check your Whole Foods
for its opening time.
LOOK, DON’T TOUCH
Don’t pick up an item
you aren’t sure you’re go-
ing to buy, according to
The Mercury News. In-
stead, do your best to read
the label without touching.
When you pick up an
item, be sure not to touch
your face, eyes and nose
after, Good Housekeeping
reported.
Gloves? Don’t bother.
“If your gloves touch a
contaminated product, they
will just contaminate the
next thing that is touched,”
according to Good House-
keeping. “Just shop with
caution.”
And of course, be sure to
wipe down your cart or
basket with sanitizing
wipes before shopping.

Fred Gelfand. Dental TechWe’re not all cut out to
be teachers — that’s a fact
many of us learned this
week.
After it was announced
that schools were closing
amid the coronavirus
pandemic, parents had to
step up and put on their
home-school hats.
For the fortunate ones
who are able to work re-
motely, this can be a great
time for bonding with your
children, whom you often
don’t see during the work-
day.
But as many found out,
homeschooling doesn’t
just involve reading, writ-
ing and ‘rithmetic.
Many social media users
are expressing their experi-
ences, some frustrating,
some hysterical, via
memes, gifs and free-
flowing rants.
Just do a search for the
hashtag #homeschooling
and you’ll see quite the
sampling. The takeaway:
Being a teacher is not easy
and we all need to appre-
ciate the hell out of them
once the madness calms
down.
Math seems to be a
tricky subject for most
folks. One parent admitted
to using Mr. Google to be
able to help.
The majority of folks
don’t know a lick about
Common Core, the stan-
dardized curriculum that
started in schools in 2009.
One funny meme is about
we’re all going to go old
school.
Dad Jason Dotson joked
that homeschool teachers
should unionize: “NO
ONE should be forced to
work under the circum-
stances,” he tweeted.
Another mom with the
handle @BrendaFA81
thinks teachers should be
paid “a million dollars”
and showed a picture of
an agonizingly perfect
makeshift calendar out-
lining activities for the
school day.
We are seeing a lot of
posts about how much
looser rules are when
studies are conducted in
the living room or kitchen.
“I’m teaching my kids
how to bartend for me
and tipping them in Gold-
fish crackers,”posted
@elisabeth.
And others are realizing
how much patience it
takes to educate, with one
meme illustrating how
many questions a child
asks in an average day.
One of the funnier
memes making the
rounds: “Home schooling
is going great: Two stu-
dents were suspended for
fighting, one student in
detention for talking back
and one teacher fired for
drinking tequila on the
job.”
Having little people
around 24/7 may not be
such a bad deal: Many
smartypants are using the
opportunity to teach home
economics.
“Cooking 101, Washing
Dishes 101A, Laundry
102, Sewing 102A, Vacu-
uming 103 & Garbage
104.”
Now that doesn’t sound
like such a bad curriculum
at all.
Joking, just joking.
Hang in there. We got
this.
