My name is Leandra Hall and I am currently attending Maritime and Science Technology Academy on Key Biscayne as a rising senior in the fall of 2020. Throughout my academic career I have accomplished feats ranging from managing an art account since the 6th grade to starting a non-profit organization that brings STEM to children in underprivileged communities. The ability to perform these feats, however, did not emerge from nowhere. It started from when I was a young child who was beginning to grow up. I was born on Miami Beach on October 29 th to two loving and hardworking parents. They instilled in me the values of kindness, integrity, and consistency that I embody throughout my day to day life. They also taught me that being different was a strength rather than a weakness and that I should be proud of the things that make me unique. This belief would help me as I was growing up and attending primary school on Miami Beach. I was one of the few black children that attended my elementary school, which made me stand out amongst my peers. But instead of letting the difference in skin color divide me from my classmates, I learned to embrace it and appreciate the uniqueness that is found throughout people from different backgrounds and ethnicities. It was also during elementary school years that I discovered a passion for the arts. I took as many extracurriculars as I possibly could ranging from art to dance to theater to lessons in the guitar and piano. This fueled my imagination and creativity that I still utilize years later when I create traditional and digital art for my art social media account and my portfolio. Then, when I was six years old, I joined my local Girl Scout chapter where I have completed nearly 12 years of active membership. Being a Girl Scout taught me the value of community service and outreach while creating a bond and sisterhood with other like-minded girls. Additionally, Girl Scouts instilled in me a desire to give back in a meaningful way. Later, when I was in middle school, I was able to act upon this desire by founding my non -profit organization in the eighth grade. My non-profit, known as AfroTechie, started as my Silver Award Project for Girl Scouts and has since expanded to continue throughout my high school career. It works to provide STEM programs and resources to children in less fortunate communities. Currently, now that I am in high school, I pursue a variety of different interests of mine that make me who I am. I enjoy taking classes in history and English and participating in clubs such as the Technology Student Association and the Black Student Association. I also perform in my school’s theatre productions as well. I can still pursue my interests in the arts while being challenged academically. I am always so grateful that these moments of my life have defined and influenced to be the best version of myself.
