Christina Miller NCARB, AICP, LEED AP
Christina Miller is a licensed architect, urban designer and registered planner working
to create vibrant and healthy, economically, environmentally and socially-resilient com-
munities. Her experience includes private-sector and public-sector clients and ranges
from regional, large-scale, transit-oriented master plans to local infill projects supported
by conventional, hybrid or form-based regulations. A creative thinker, Christina's design
philosophy emphasizes intensive study of local traditions, context and culture as a basis
for sustainable architectural design and master planning. She is an advocate for healthy
living, alternative housing and transportation options, better food production practic-
es, and land and seas stewardship. She has taught several studios at the University of
Miami and been a visiting design critic at UM and Harvard's Graduate School of Design.
Christina's early career includes construction work on Paolo Soleri's ideal city Arcosanti
in Mayer, AZ, and serving as Project Coordinator for the New London [Connecticut] De-
velopment Corporation, where her dedication and focus on downtown revitalization,
economic development and historic preservation earned her a Mayoral Plaque of Ap-
preciation. Determined to work to improve our built and living environments, she came
the University of Miami at the time the SmartCode was emerging, earning dual masters
degrees in architecture and urban design as well as several recognitions.
From 2003-2005 Christina interned for architect Allan Shulman whose practice special-
izes in historic Art Deco and MiMo buildings and design. With core architectural licens-
ing hours completed, Christina joined Duany, Plater-Zyberk & Company (DPZ) in 2005,
where she worked directly with Principals Andres Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk
on notable architectural projects and environmental initiatives including: the University
of Miami President's House; the Collection Residences; the Miami Design District; the
Seven50 Regional Plan for Southeast Florida; the Climate Change Action Task Force; and
substantial contributions to the firm's work with Agrarian Urbanism.
At DPZ, Christina was involved with significant local public sector coding projects includ-
ing the ground-breaking Form-Based Code, Miami21, where she participated in public
outreach and the transformation of existing thoroughfares into more walkable, bike-
able and transit-ready corridors; Coconut Grove's Business Improvement District Action
Plan; and several Transit-Oriented and transit-ready (TOD) projects in Broward. She also
managed public sector master planning and visioning work in Bonita Springs, FL and for
the Baton Rouge Redevelopment Authority to retrofit historic buildings and encourage
infill along transit. Private, developer-based projects she managed include: the Miami
Design District Master Plan and Special Area Plan and several California new towns for
upwards of 20,000 residents, for which she was also a prime designer and code author.
Christina built lasting positive relationships with clients, which often yielded repeated
work. Beyond design, coding and sustainability expertise, Christina's skills include com-
plex management and oversight, including the organization of "mega" charrettes to
foster rapid feedback loops of different disciplines working concurrently, resulting in
highly-informed and readily implementable plans and codes. Her ability to work from
personal experience with hands-on construction and an architectural design and build-
ing code scale - to an urban design and zoning code scale - to a regional and compre-
hensive plan scale and from public or private perspectives is rare. She has a drive and
determination for a thorough understanding at each level.
In 2019, Christina launched MAPS Design Studio, LLC, a Florida-registered, woman-
owned business based in Miami Beach. She is orienting her firm towards more archi-
tectural design work, and looking to identify ways in which more sustainable decisions
are not more cost demanding, particularly to smaller owners and businesses.
