PROFESSIONAL MILESTONES RÉSUMÉ
1971‐1973
Most of our records, plans and images were stored in our office which was completely destroyed by Hurricane
Andrew in 1992. Most of the material we are using in this summary prior to August 24th, 1992 has been
collected from friends, relatives and the World Wide Web.
After working two years as office manager for the
landscape design firm of James L. Brown in South Miami
while attending Miami‐Dade Jr. College, Orlando Comas
established his landscape design firm. One of his first
commissions was Casa del Mar Condominium. The
building will remain the tallest building in Key Biscayne
with its 24 stories due to code changes limiting height.
After fifty years it still keeps the initial design with its
meandering walkways of the pool area and beach.

Building of the Month Award for Landscape Design
Shrine Our Lady of Charity in Miami
Orlando Comas collaborated pro‐bono with architect Jose Perez Benitoa and Monsignor Agustin Roman in the
original landscape design of the Shrine Our Lady of Charity in Miami. Royal palms and shrubs were donated by
local nurseries. On December 2, 1973, the Shrine was dedicated. Cardinal Kroll, Archbishop of Philadelphia,
then president of the United States Conference of Bishops, presided.
In 1973, The Miami City Commission appointed Orlando Comas as a member of the newly created
Board to rezone downtown Miami for the next twelve years.
1974‐1986
During 1974 and 1975 he carries out the landscape design of several Private residences in the City of Miami
and City of Coral Gables, among them the house of then Vice Mayor and Mrs. Manolo Reboso and the
residence of Mr. and Mrs. John Lasseville, a political consultant
At the end of 1975, Owners of a large scale parcel at “El Morro Tourist Complex” were planning a large scale
development in Venezuela. Orlando Comas was retained to be Landscape Designer for the project. Trips are
made by him to Venezuela and to the beachfront site and preliminary meetings are held with what will be the
professional design team. Due to the lack of plant material availability it was necessary to plan a large scale
nursery. He is offered an association to overtake the design, nursery operation and installation of the
landscape. Search for the nursery land started immediately and plans were on its way for him to move to
Venezuela at beginning of 1976.
“El Morro Tourist Complex”, Puerto la Cruz, Venezuela.
Agromesa Nursery
In the outskirts of Barcelona, 15 minutes
from Puerto la Cruz a 100 acre tract of
land was acquired with the Neveri River
surrounding a good portion of the land
for irrigation water. Hardwood cuttings
were procured locally and brought in
from Brazil, Colombia and the USA. Seeds
were imported from the USA, Hawaii and
New Zealand.
Landscape Architect Orlando Comas,
directed the operations, reproduction in
mist houses, , plant species selection and

three years of dedicated work, the
nursery started supplying plants to the
projects and their landscape areas began
to take shape.
Oswaldo Handro & Burle Marx Amazon Expedition
The Brazilian Amazon forest is a special place in the world
where botanists and other related professionals were able to
engage in studying the many species of plants. It is the world’s
largest forest to explore. This expedition was organized by a
group led by landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx
and Oswaldo Handro, a Brazilian botanist who specialized in
pteridophytes and spermatophytes and for whom the
Handroanthus genus was named after. Burle Marx was one of
the first Brazilians to speak out against deforestation.
Expeditions such as this enabled him to add significantly to
the botanical sciences, by discovering new plants. At least 50
plants bear his name. On May 3rd, 1976 from Manaus, the group of local guides, helpers, Guido Frederico João
Pabst a Brazilian botanist, a Burle Marx guests, Léia Akcelrad Lerner, Raymond John Evison from England and
Bill Rosenberg from Miami, Florida. Invited from Venezuela were Dr. Tobias Lasser, Director of Caracas Botanical
Garden, and Orlando Comas a landscape architect.

Americo Vespucio, in the La Aquavilla sector of the El Morro Tourist Complex in Puerto la Cruz,
Venezuela. There, the largest tourist resort in Venezuela and South America began to be built. In 1977
the construction of the complex began, the work was completed in 1982. At the helm of construction
was engineer and builder Jorge Vila Massot with a group of assistant engineers. Landscape architect
Orlando Comas was brought in to take charge of the construction finishes, interior design and
purchasing of furnishings and accessories for the hotel rooms and restaurants.
The hotel had thirty four three story buildings a two story reception building a large two story building
to house four restaurants, a pool area coffee shop, stores, a disco and gym. The 1,312 rooms made it
the largest number of hotel rooms ever built in South America.
Landscape Architect Orlando Comas, designed all the outdoor areas of the complex, lakes, fountains and
swimming pools that helped to complement the landscape enjoyed by the guests of the hotel that was located
in front of the beach of Bahia de Pozuelos. Prior to the construction start of the Hotel, Comas created a nursery
that supplied all the ornamental plants for the Doral and other complexes in the area.
