Born in Chicago she wintered in Miami Beach with her parents starting in 1940. It was an exciting time as the city was growing, but still had a “small town” feel. She attended North Beach Elementary, Nautilus Junior High and the original Miami Beach High School located at 13th and Drexel. Joy’s Grandparents were early members of Temple Beth Sholom, where Joy served on the Board of Trustees and continues to be an active member today. Joy was an exemplary student, having graduated as class Valedictorian, Editor of the Yearbook and recipient of many awards and honors. She was selected "Most Intelligent" and "Most LikelyTo Succeed" by her classmates. She was the first girl from Beach High to be accepted at Radcliffe College. While at Radcliffe she majored in English, and was a Classical Music Announcer for Radio Radcliffe. After marriage to Al Alschuler and three children, she completed her studies at the University of Miami with a B.A. in English Literature, Cum Laude. After living first in Tokyo for two years, and then in New York, the family moved to Miami Beach in 1971. Joy accepted a position as a Management Trainee at American Savings and Loan, and after several banking courses and promotions, she found she loved the field. Thus began her impressive 32 year career in the Banking Industry. In addition to her dedicated career Joy has been an active member in a variety of City of Miami Beach Land Use Boards, as well as the numerous charitable and civic organizations. She served on the original Miami Beach Historic Preservation Board, and chaired both the Planning Board and Zoning Board of Adjustment for many years, downzoning much of the over developing city. She was the first woman President of the Miami Beach Kiwanis Club, was on the Board of Trustees of the Bass Museum, National Council of The New World Symphony, chaired the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce, was President of the MBSHS PTSA as well as serving as chair or co-chair of every MBSHS Class of ’54 Reunion since the 30th reunion. Joy is also a member of two Book Clubs, one all women, which has met for more than 40 years, and a newer Couples Book Club, for the past 20 years. Joy is an integral part of Miami Beach and has applied her skills to her current position as an outstanding Commissioner of the City of Miami Beach for those past four years. She served as Chair of the Land Use and Development Board, Vice Chair of the Finance and Budget Committee, and actively participated in the Neighborhood/Community Affairs Committee and the Sustainability/Resiliency Committee. She represented the city on the Homeless Trust Board and the WOLFSONIAN Advisory Board. Joy continues promoting arts and culture in Miami Beach, serves on the FIU WOLFSONIAN Museum Advisory Board, and remains active with the New World Symphony, the newly renovated Bass Museum, and Funding Arts Council (FAN), Joy is especially proud of her children: Dr. Mari Alschuler, David Alschuler, Esq., Mark Van Wye and grandson Meyer Van Wye. Her loving husband of 20 years, Judge J. Fred Malakoff graduated Harvard Law School ‘62 and is a Miami Beach High graduate and classmate. Joy exemplifies a woman who has “Broken the Glass Ceiling”. Her mother always told Joy, “You can do anything you want to.” And Joy has succeeded in every endeavor.
