Water Quality Update
November 17, 2021
Background
•On March 4,2020,a sub-contractor struck a 42-inch sanitary sewer main near the intersection of17thStreetandLincolnRoad.
•On March 5,2020,this caused a sewer force mainbreakattheparkinglotat72ndStreetandCollinsAvenue.
•Sewage recovery and cleaning efforts beganimmediately.
•The City has made a concerted effort to identify, rule out,or confirm possible sources of cross-contamination in the area of the kayak launch.
Cleaning & Testing
•The City retained the services of Flotech to clean the stormwater system within the limits of 72nd street.
•Smoke Testing was performed to identify potential cross connections in the area surrounding Park View Island.
•Results: no evidence of cross-connection or leaks.
Targeted Water Quality Sampling
•Targeted water quality testing at the kayak launch at Parkview Island Park occurred between March 6, 2020 and March 19, 2020.
•The City performed Fecal Indicator Bacteria testing to identify levels of Fecal Coliform and Enterococcus within the affected water body.
•Tests continue monthly at the kayak launch.
Microbial Source Tracking
•The City hired Source Molecular to identify fecal gene biomarkers forhumanandcanineswithinthecanal.
•Results:
•Fecal bacteria from humans was not detected or was below thelimitofquantification
•Fecal bacteria from canines was detected in highconcentrations.
•In September 2021,an additional biomarker was included for birds.
•Results:
•Fecal bacteria from birds was also detected in highconcentrations.
Education & Outreach Campaign
A dog litter campaign was launched after reviewing the
source tracking results to provide education and
outreach on the importance of picking up after pets and
the effects of dog waste on the surrounding waterways.
Doggie Bag Stations
Doggie bag stations were
added to several locations
in the vicinity of the Island to
encourage pet owners to
clean up waste.

Consultant Results
•The City retained ESciences to conduct a thoroughanalysisofthedata.
•Results:
•Sampling plan was developed for the kayaklaunchareatofurtherevaluatethepotentialeffectsofrainfall, tide, andproximitytostormwaterandsewerfeatures.
•Additional investigation would be necessary.
•Option 1:
•Pilot project assessing the feasibility of using aeration to restore the waterbody surrounding the kayak launch.
•Option 2: Continue sampling & investigation
•Option 3: Discussion
Next Steps
