• Toronto Public Library: Responsible for the infrastructure (hardware and
software) deployment for Library’s new Web application. Challenge: deliver the
project with minimum disruption of Library’s Data Center day-to-day operation.
Met the challenge by extensive communication and contact with the client’s
supervisors, management and other contractors. Total budget: $800K
• CIBC World Markets: Responsible for the development of a Web application,
allowing brokerage branch offices to communicate with the Service Center at
Head Office. Challenge: to maintain motivation and high project staff morale in a
high-pressure, fast paced environment. Met the challenge by adequate presence,
communication with the staff and the client, establishment of appropriate status
review process, which shielded the staff from changing priorities and stress
caused by the line managements “need to know”.
• SUN Microsystems: Responsible for the project to provide SUN’s partners
(resellers) and potential partners to submit applications and maintain status via
Web front and OpenText backend, with Java in-between. Budget: $1.5MM
• LavaLife: Responsible for the application maintenance and development
activities for a B2C (dating service) Web application. Responsible for the Web
maintenance department consisting of 6. Challenge: Provide the management with
a structured and organized approach to prioritizing initiatives and leveraging
scarce resources (staff and skills). Met the challenge by establishing the plans and
monitoring reporting processes for the effective management of the development
efforts.
• Canada Life: Within Canada Life's Global Village initiative, Burntsand Inc. was
hired and ZM responsible for the project to recommend a strategy and architecture
to resolve communication difficulties presented by different environments used in
Canada (Lotus Notes) and UK (Microsoft). The recommendation was the result of
extensive study of various installed software components and tools, their usage
and issues encountered. The team, consisting of project manager (ZM) and two
architects/strategists and one researcher conducted numerous interviews with
stakeholders across most key functional areas of the company world wide..
• Other clients/projects: Ontario Government – Ministry of Labour, Toronto
District School Board, Fairmount Hotels, HydroOne.
Bank of Nova Scotia - Toronto, Ontario 1997 - 2000
Program Manager
▪ In a matrix organization, was responsible for all project activities to find an appropriate
standard banking platform for the bank’s international affiliates. Challenge: to bring together
various levels of management and technical staff to overcome diverse priorities, concerns
and interests. Met the challenge with a project structure, which established project sponsor’s
authority to bear on the project team. Articulated the strategies to identify the alternatives and
final selection criteria. The project resulted in the proposal to the Executive to approve and
fund a 20,000 workdays, 13MM restructuring of the bank’s Caribbean system.
▪ Responsible for the restructuring project, involving several teams in a weak matrix
organization and sub-projects, through the development, integrated testing and user
acceptance testing phases. Challenge: communication with many departments and business
units, including the off-shore development team. Met the challenge with a system that
allowed rapid access to all information regarding the project, especially issues and
resolutions. The restructured system, called ScotiaGlobe, is currently being implemented,
delivered within budget and less than 10% delivery delay.
▪ Responsible for several projects to convert El Salvador affiliate’s local system to the Bank’s
banking system. Challenge: to unify the project team across cultures and manage the project
activities spanning several departments between Canada and El Salvador. Met the challenge
by extensive communication and presence. The system, called ASTRO, was successfully
implemented within the required time frame and within budget.
▪ Identified the choice and functional gap analysis for Bank’s Costa Rica affiliate’s brokerage
system, recommended the solution, coached the local staff in project techniques and
established the project guidelines for a successful local implementation.
Bank of Nova Scotia – Montreal, Quebec 1994 - 1997

▪ Managed an IT department, planning, organizing, budgeting and supervising a team of 20 –
30 IT professionals providing support to the Stock Transfer and Corporate Trust. During my
management, the Bank attained the Canadian leadership in this line of business, growing the
customer base and acquiring other Stock Transfer agents. The budget: up to $5MM.
Challenge: to provide IT solutions to a rapidly growing business line with rapidly changing
needs. Met the challenge by aligning the IT objectives with business, by developing relevant
