From 2014-2020, I served on the City of Miami Beach Historic Preservation Board for three consecutive terms in
the seat reserved for a registered architect. For the past four years, I have researched and taught Historic
Preservation and Sea Level Rise on Miami Beach to graduate students in Architect

Bio
John Stuart, a registered architect in Florida, has lived in Miami Beach for more than twenty-five years,
during which time he has served on the Mayor’s Art Deco Cultural District Panel, on the Miami Beach
Historic Preservation Board, on the Board of Governors of the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce and
the Miami Beach Historic Preservation Board. He is co-author of the Florida building entries for
Archipedia, the online encyclopedia of the Society of Architectural Historians. At FIU, Stuart
is Distinguished University Professor of Architecture, Associate Dean for Cultural and Community
Engagement in the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts and Executive Director of FIU’s
Miami Beach Urban Studios and FIU CARTA | Mana Wynwood, both community embedded innovation
and collaboration spaces. Stuart’s interdisciplinary research has been funded by the NEA, NEH, NSF,
Graham and Knight foundations and focuses on the various intersections of historic preservation, the
environment, resilience, technology and design. For the past few years Stuart has been working with
FIU graduate architecture students to explore resiliency strategies and visualizations in Miami Beach’s
Historic Districts, designed to build community consensus about future resiliency policies related to the
built environment.
