Sophie Ringel is the founder of Clean Miami Beach, a non-profit organization that hosts weekly cleanups to pick up trash and raise awareness regarding the negative impacts that plastic has on our fragile ecosystem. She was born in Germany, she moved to Miami in 2016, where she later married a local resident. Although she has a degree in graphic design, her true passion is to focus on environmental issues, such as sustainability and preservation. This passion became even stronger while walking on the beach, where she witnessed copious amounts of trash and pollution along the shoreline. Seeing this ignited inspiration to develop a weekly beach cleanup. Today, Clean Miami Beach has held 200 beach clean ups; worked with 7,222 volunteers; removed 58,613 lbs of debris from Miami Dade County’s beaches, parks, and waterways. In recognition of those efforts Clean Miami Beach and Sophie Ringel have been covered in news media such as Miami New Times, Voyage Miami Magazine, ABC and FOX networks. In addition, Clean Miami Beach and Sophie Ringel have received international recognition in the Dominican Republic and in Germany. Furthermore, Clean Miami Beach's and Sophie Ringel's efforts were featured on Discovery Channel for the 50th Earth Day celebration "The Great Global Clean Up". Sophie's citywide efforts were honored with the City of Miami Beach "Unsung Hero Award" in 2020 and locally her efforts were recognized with the "Citizen Impact Award" in 2019. In 2022 she received the “Better Beach Award” and just got nominated for the “Badass Woman of 2022 Award”. Clean Miami Beach has made a lasting impact on marine and terrestrial life here in South Florida, as well as helped educate our community about the issues surrounding “single-use plastic" and other unsustainable practices. As each week passes, Clean Miami Beach continues to create citizen awareness and donates hundreds of man hours to restore and protect our beautiful, and unique ecosystem. Sophie’s enthusiastic passion inspires and motivates local communities to change everyday habits and their way of life.
