Parks and Recreation Facilities Board
I would like to apply for a position on the Parks and Recreation Facilities Board, with a specific
interest in serving as a golf course advisor and advocate for the reasons listed below:
First and foremost, I love my City.
I am a life-long resident of Miami Beach. Born Mt Sinai 1958, graduated Beach High class of ’76
(go High Tides! :-), owner of The Laundry Bar on North Lincoln Lane for about 10 years, and
Boy Bar on Normandy Drive (concurrently) for about 4 years. Both bars were enormously
popular and successful.
I have also served on my Condo Board (Nautica Condo Assoc) as President and Treasurer for 5
years and will be serving again in 2024 for a 6th term. As a Condo Board member there will not
be any lobbying involved on my part.
I sold my bars and retired. Golf is now my life’s passion.
I am a member of Miami Beach Golf Course and by extension Normandy Shores GC.
I began playing golf 52 years ago at age 13. My parents, Marsha & Jerry Olin were avid golfers
and instilled in me a love of the game. My father was a hotelier on Miami Beach since the early
1950’s ending his Miami Beach hotel career as General Manager and then Partner in the Seville
Hotel from around 1966 to 1974. My ties to Miami Beach run long and deep.
My first golf lesson was at “Bayshore” in 1971 with Sissy Hyatt (I still remember my very first
lesson…she scared me to death! :-) and I’ve been playing there, and at Normandy Shores, ever
since.
Three years ago I started a Tuesday women’s golf group at Normandy with the goal that it
would be a totally inclusive group in which women of all ages and abilities were welcome. In so
many golf leagues, there are handicap requirements, but I wanted our group to be open to
beginners so we could instill a love of the game to others. Golf can be a very intimidating sport. I
wanted to provide an environment in which all women were supported and encouraged. As I tell
all of our “newbies” when they call me, often with trepidation, to ask about our group, “none of
us came out of the womb knowing how to play golf. We were all beginners once”.
My group has become enormously popular and successful. We started with 10 or 12 women
and have grown to a roster of 120+ women, 30-40 of whom play each week in season.
I have a great working relationship with the staff and managers at both facilities, especially
Alexis Garcia and Jeff Hunt at MBGC and Bobby Wilcox and Eric Kasdin at Normandy, who I
am sure will vouch for my organizational and communication skills as well as my talent for
problem solving.
I am a great organizer. I can take a leadership role, but know how to collaborate. I love my City
and I love golf.
I think I would be a tremendous asset to the Parks and Recreation Facilities Board as a Golf
Course Advisor and Advocate.
I appreciate your consideration of my application.
