SOUTH FLORIDA YOUTH
FOUNDATION
South Florida Youth Foundation
The South Florida Youth Foundation was founded in 2001, to raise needed funds and
provide direct assistance to elementary aged children in Overtown and Liberty City.
Founding Director, Karen Fryd, began providing school supplies directly to children in
1999 after visiting Fredrick Douglass Elementary in Overtown. There, ateacher told her
that many children could not do their homework because they did not have the basic
supplies to perform their tasks. Together with school counselors and neighbor hood
resource officers from the City of Miami Police Department, Karen identified specific
needs such as uniforms, sweaters, shoes, socks, and books. The lack of these basic items
were preventing children from successfully completing their school year.
Through the South Florida Youth Foundation, Karen has sponsored turkey drives and
Christmas toy drives which have distributed over 20,000 toys. The Foundation has
targeted programs in inner city schools such as the “Youth Crime Patrol Watch”, and
sponsored teams such as the YMCA at Holmes Elementary and Summer Camp for Foster
Children. Karen has sponsored numerous projects such as: gardens in inner-city
elementary schools, PTA Programs, Installed aKitchen for the Mentally Trainable
Handicapped Program at Booker T. Washington High School, provided band uniforms
for Fredrick Douglass Elementary as well as Choir robes for Dunbar Elementary, The
foundation has also created a“Midnight Basketball Program” in Overtown, which
purpose is to keeps kids in apositive environment at high risk hours.
Through Karen’s efforts, the foundation has distributed more than 100,000 articles of
brand new clothing, 3000 prom dresses, over 20,000 school uniforms and thousands of
socks and underwear to children in need. Karen has donated industrial pop com machines
to PTA’s, donated computers, and over 20,000 backpacks with supplies inside. In
addition, Karen has sponsored Christmas parties at the New Horizons Senior Center in
Liberty City and given seniors food baskets after the hurricane. Also installed was
computer lab for seniors who had never worked with them. (Thru partnership with
Hewlett Packard).
When asked why she is so dedicated to the Foundation, Mrs. Fryd states that her
“inspiration has always been the wonderful children, the dedicated teachers, and the
police department with their sincere efforts to better the lives of children with prevention
programs. All this is possible through their work and that of friends and volunteers who
have helped me with their hard work and generous contributions”.
Headquarters for the South Florida Youth Foundation is at Mrs. Fryd’s home which she
shares with her husband Jonathan and three children. “By keeping my overhead to zero, I
am able to put 100% of all contributions to work to help children and their communities”.
