Having so many returned to Miami Beach and Mango’s year after year for decades is quite incredible”, said David Wallack. David was the First President of the Ocean Drive Business Association in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. Then alongside his dear friend Tony Goldman, may he rest in peace, he became the Vice-Chairman of the Ocean Drive Association for 35 years helping to initiate and continue the revitalization of Ocean Drive and South Beach since the late 1980’s and early 1990’s and currently remain a Board Member of the current Ocean Drive Association. David Wallack is a innovator. David’s first innovative project began when he was clerking in his senior year in Miami Law School doing medical research in 1976. In 1977 he innovated the first redevelopment of an existing property in Miami Beach creating “The Eastern Sun” Adult Congregate Living Facility (ACLF) which was the first commercial size ACLF in the State of Florida. It was a huge success and set the standard for excellence in care of the elderly and became a model facility that many followed in creation of ACLF’s throughout Dade County and the State. The Eastern Sun operated from 1978-1990. In doing so, David was the first artist in Miami Beach to bring back pastel colors to a building since the 1940’s. David innovated those colors on Ocean Drive at The Eastern Sun 3 years before the noted “Deco” artist, Leonard Horowitz, began his brilliant art on South Beach Deco buildings. It was then that David also created the first exterior artist-painted mural wall in Miami Beach since the 1040’s. It was done in the 1980’s at The Eastern Sun ACLF. As a graduate of The University of Miami in 1972 (Magna Cum Laude) and then graduating University of Miami Law School in 1977 and becoming a member of the Florida Bar since 1978, Wallack transformed the elderly care industry, bringing live entertainment and music, yoga, meditation, and many forms of holistic care, and integrated them into his concept of gerontology. David pioneered the concept of Hospice Care for the elderly in those years. He became internationally recognized for his work and lectured international delegations from Japan on New Age Care for the Elderly. It was then that David received his first of three (3) keys to the City of Miami Beach for his international achievement. Also, being the only one to have evacuated an entire Senior Care Facility in the United States (three times), David was asked to lecture hospitals, nursing homes and other care facilities at the Dade County Hurricane Center on “Evacuation of a Senior Care Facility”. During the late 1980’s, David transitioned into again reinventing himself into the transformational renaissance of South Beach into what it is today. After meeting and becoming close friends with Mark Soyka and Tony Goldman, David conceived of creating the first redevelopment of a South Beach building into a multi-use commercial concept that included restaurants, commercial shops, offices, and a small live music cafe bar he would name “Mango’s Tropical Cafe”. It was then that he actively became inspired to become one of the leaders in the Renaissance movement in Miami Beach. During the 1980’s Barbara Capitan sought out David as a private counselor to help her in her path of having the Deco Movement and Preservation become accepted by the cities of Miami Beach and also the City of Opa Locka. David is a respected artist, and to this day is recognized as an iconic and dynamic figure in the creation of the South Beach scene of the 1990’s and 2000’s operating world famous Mango’s Tropical Cafe. David has also sat as a member of the Planning Board for the City of Miami Beach and has participated in legislation first for ACLF’s and then, for 30 years, of hospitality legislation in the City of Miami Beach. David was also on the City’s Night Life Taskforce for 20 years with Chairman Steven Polisar. Wallack has been honored by many administrations of Miami Beach and has been recognized on many occasions for his contributions to the arts and charitable causes. He has been a resident, and then a business owner and operator on Miami Beach since 1955 along with his father, Irving Wallack and his mother and inspiration, Florence Wallack, may they rest in peace. His work career included his sister Barbara Buck, sister Laurie, now deceased, his former wife and best friend, Trudy Wallack, and his two children, daughter Janna and son Joshua. He has five grandchildren. David attended Central Beach Elementary School (Feinberg-Fisher), Fisher Jr. High School, Nautilus Jr. High School, and Miami Beach Senior High School in 1964 and 1965. He graduated Admiral Farragut Naval Military Academy in 1966. David’s two sisters and two children, Janna and Joshua are also Miami Beach High School graduates. ***
