RECOMMENDATION Accept the recommendation of the Finance and Economic Resiliency Committee, at its October 18, 2024 meeting, directing Administration to request a donation from the Five Park developer for a mature shade tree for the Canopy Park playground, and combine the various commemorative programs and reinvigorate the marketing of the programs. BACKGROUND/HISTORY During the September 11, 2024 Commission meeting, Commissioner Kristen Rosen Gonzalez referred a discussion on installing shade above the children's playground equipment in Canopy Park to the Finance and Economic Resiliency Committee ("FERC") and the Public Safety and Neighborhood quality of Life Committee ("PSNQLC"). During the October 18,2024 FERC meeting, the Committee discussed the item and Commissioner Kristen Rosen Gonzalez motioned this item to Commission directing Administration to request a donation from the Five Park developer for a mature shade tree for the Canopy Park playground, and combine the various commemorative programs and reinvigorate the marketing of the programs (Adopt A Bench, Brick Paver Program and Commemorative Tree Program). Commission Tanya K. Bhatt seconded the motion and all were in favor. ANALYSIS The playground at Canopy Park was originally designed to be shaded by Mahogany trees as they grow in over the years along with other trees planted by the City. Currently, there are several points in the day in which the temperatures are very high, making it unpleasant for parents to take their children to the playground. During the FERC meeting, the Parks and Recreation Department proposed two shade solutions for the Canopy Park playground. The first option involved the installation of multiple shade sails strategically placed around the existing tree canopy. While this approach did not offer complete coverage of the playground, it presented a more budget-friendly alternative, with an estimated cost of$265,000. The second option entailed constructing a shade structure that would envelop the entire playground area; however, this would necessitate the relocation of several trees. This Page 403 of 1993 more extensive solution comes with a higher budget, estimated at $429,000, reflecting the significant alterations required to the current landscape. FISCAL IMPACT STATEMENT Administration will be contacting the developer regarding the tree donation. At this point, there is no financial impact.
