A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, DIRECTING THE
ADMINISTRATION TO DEVELOP AN INITIATIVE DESIGNATED TO
INCENTIVIZE LOCAL BUSINESSES TO PARTICIPATE IN COMPOST
PICKUP SERVICES, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO FINANCIAL
INCENTIVES, PARTNERSHIPS WITH EXISTING LOCAL
COMPOSTING PROVIDERS, AND EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH, AND
RETURN TO THE FULL CITY COMMISSION WITH ITS FINDINGS
WITHIN 90 DAYS OF THE PASSAGE OF THIS RESOLUTION.
WHEREAS, at its October 15, 2024, the City's advisory Youth Commission passed
a unanimous motion requesting the Mayor and City Commission to consider incentivizing
local Miami Beach businesses to participate in composting pickup services, which was
transmitted to the Mayor and City Commission with Letter-to-Commission No. #465-2024;
and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach is committed to reducing waste, promoting
sustainability, and encouraging environmentally-friendly practices within the community;
and
WHEREAS, composting is an effective method of waste diversion that reduces
landfill waste, lowers greenhouse gas emissions, and creates nutrient-rich soil for use in
local agriculture and landscaping; and
WHEREAS, the participation of local businesses in composting programs has the
potential to significantly reduce the volume of organic waste sent to landfills, contributing
to the City's environmental goals and long-term sustainability efforts; and
WHEREAS, incentivizing local businesses to participate in compost pickup
services can reduce costs for businesses, create opportunities for green jobs, and
establish the City as a local leader in waste reduction and sustainability initiatives; and
WHEREAS, local businesses interested in composting services may be deterred
by associated costs, logistical challenges, or lack of information on existing composting
programs and benefits; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission direct the Administration to develop
an initiative designated to incentivize local businesses to participate in compost pickup
services, including, but not limited to financial incentives, partnerships with existing local
composting providers, and educational outreach, and return to the full City Commission
with its findings within 90 days of the passage of this Resolution.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City
Commission hereby direct the Administration to develop an initiative designated to
incentivize local businesses to participate in compost pickup services, including, but not
limited to financial incentives, partnerships with existing local composting providers, and
educational outreach, and return to the full City Commission with its findings within 90
days of the passage of this Resolution. / - '
