A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, AUTHORIZING THE CITY
ADMINISTRATION TO ENGAGE WITH THE SCHOOL BOARD OF
MIAMI-DADE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS REGARDING THE
CONTRIBUTING HISTORIC BUILDING LOCATED AT 1436
PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE IN THE ESPAIVOLA WAY LOCAL
HISTORIC DISTRICT, TO EXPLORE A POSSIBLE JOINT
PARTNERSHIP TO PRESERVE, RESTORE AND REPURPOSE THE
EXISTING BUILDING FOR EDUCATIONAL OR WORKFORCE
HOUSING PURPOSES.
WHEREAS, on October 1, 2024, the Miami-Dade County Public Schools
("MDCPS") Office of Capital Improvements Projects provided notice to the City of Miami
Beach of its intent to fully demolish the building located at 1436 Pennsylvania Avenue,
with demolition scheduled to commence on October 14, 2024; and
WHEREAS, the building at 1436 Pennsylvania Avenue is classified as a
contributing structure within the Espanola Way Local Historic District and represents a
significant piece of Miami Beach's architectural and cultural heritage; and
WHEREAS, constructed in 1933 and designed by noted architect L. Murray
Dixon, the building is an important example of Mediterranean Revival/Art Deco
Transitional architecture, styles that define much of Miami Beach's historic character;
and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission recognizes the value of preserving
historic structures that contribute to the City's unique identity and architectural heritage,
and seek to explore opportunities to prevent the demolition of this significant building;
and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission wishes to be granted 6-12 months
to explore alternative solutions and gain access to engineering reports to assess the
building's structural condition, and potentially seek a second opinion, as there is no
imminent life safety risk; and
WHEREAS, thus, the Mayor and City Commission wishes to authorize the City
Administration to engage in discussions with the School Board of Miami-Dade County
Public Schools to explore a potential joint partnership that would preserve, restore, and
repurpose the building, potentially for educational purposes or workforce housing,
thereby serving the community's needs while honoring the City's historic fabric.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City
Commission hereby authorize the City Administration to engage with the School Board
of Miami-Dade County Public Schools regarding the contributing historic building
located at 1436 Pennsylvania Avenue in the Espanola Way local historic district, to
explore a possible joint partnership to preserve, restore and repurpose the existing
building for educational or workforce housing purposes.
