WHEREAS, on October 1, 2024, the Miami-Dade County Public Schools ("MDCPS") Office of Capital Improvements Projects provided notice to the City of Miami Beach of its intent to fully demolish the building located at 1436 Pennsylvania Avenue, with demolition scheduled to commence on October 14, 2024; and WHEREAS, the building at 1436 Pennsylvania Avenue is classified as a contributing structure within the Espanola Way Local Historic District and represents a significant piece of Miami Beach's architectural and cultural heritage; and WHEREAS, constructed in 1933 and designed by noted architect L. Murray Dixon, the building is an important example of Mediterranean Revival/Art Deco Transitional architecture, styles that define much of Miami Beach's historic character; and WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission recognizes the value of preserving historic structures that contribute to the City's unique identity and architectural heritage, and seek to explore opportunities to prevent the demolition of this significant building; and WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission wishes to be granted 6-12 months to explore alternative solutions and gain access to engineering reports to assess the building's structural condition, and potentially seek a second opinion, as there is no imminent life safety risk; and WHEREAS, thus, the Mayor and City Commission wishes to authorize the City Administration to engage in discussions with the School Board of Miami-Dade County Public Schools to explore a potential joint partnership that would preserve, restore, and repurpose the building, potentially for educational purposes or workforce housing, thereby serving the community's needs while honoring the City's historic fabric. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City Commission hereby authorize the City Administration to engage with the School Board of Miami-Dade County Public Schools regarding the contributing historic building located at 1436 Pennsylvania Avenue in the Espanola Way local historic district, to explore a possible joint partnership to preserve, restore and repurpose the existing building for educational or workforce housing purposes.
