SITES IN DADE AND BROW ARD COUNTIES
Wi,llpy; 19.!,9a
p. 79
, ARCHEOLOGICAL survey and excavations, on or near the Atlaritic coast in Dade and
.l"1. Broward counties, was begun dunng the wmter of 1933-34, Mr. Gene M. Stirling,
supervisor of the Beile Glade project, was in general charge of these investigations during
the first wint~. but actual field operations at and near Miami Beach were under the control
of Mr. Vernon Lamme assisted by Mr. Karl Squires. Mr. Lamme continued surveys and
limited excavations in this vicinity until the fJll of 1934- Most of this work was conducted
intermittently with very small labor crews. There was, apparently, little or no recorded
work carried out after September, 1934. Sometime in late 1935' excavations were resumed
at the Surfs ide site, Miami Beach, by Mr. Squires who was succeeded by Dr. Julian H.
Ste<w-ard of the Bureau of American Ethnology. The notes covering the re-exca\'ation of the
Surfside site are by.Mr. Lloyd C. Reichard, and they are, for the most part, are-capitulation
of work done by Mr. Squires and Dr. Steward. Sites subsequently excavated, however,
were under th~ immediate supervision of Mr. Reichard, and the complete field record on all
of the mounds treated in this section of the present report was prepared by him.
There are eight sites, in all, in the Dade.Broward group. The first and largest is the
Surfside site (~ignated in the field notes as "Mound A and Bn), in the outskirts of Miami
Beach. Opa Locka 1, Opa Locb 2, and Opa Locb 3 (designated as "Mounds C, D, and H"
in Reichard's field notes) are located in Dade County. Golden Glade 1 and Golden Glade 2
(designated "GI and G2" in Reichard's notes) are also in the same county. Baily I and
Baily 2 are in Broward County on the Baily property. (These two were "Mounds E and P"
in the. field report.)
Deh site is described, and the ~xcavations are treated, as a unit. A listing of all artifact
t}'!c:: and a briet discus::ion of tlleir distribution III the site 15 a 1"0 given with each site unit.

INVESTIGATIONS
The Surfside site, previously reported by Goggin (1946) and Sma!l (1929: 94~5), con-
sists of two mounds, one of which proved to be a habitation mound and the other a sand
burial mound.. They are located in the upper end of Biscayne Bay near the mouth of Indian
Creek. The community is now known as Surfside, and it is situated in the northeastern rart
of the Southwest t of Northwest t, Section 3)', Township )2S, Range 42 E, Dade County.
The habitation or refuse mound lies between 91St and 93rd Streets and is bisected by Bay
Drive \vhich runs north and south. The burial mound, also cut in two by Bay Drive is
directly north of the village site, near the corner of 94th and the Drive. Both mounds lie
only a short distance from Indian Creek, a protected body of water lying between the
Miami barrier reef and the mainland. The ocean is about one-quarter of a mile distJ.:1:. The
midden or habitation site measures 372 fe~~ north-south and was slightly over 6 ft:et above
the surrounding ground level at the highest point. In 1934 the burial mound l1',casured 20
feet north-south and 70 feet east-west. An earlier account (Small, 1929: 95') rcports the
mound to have been 100 feet in diameter and higher than the midden site.
in 1923, a real estate development of the area was responsibleJor first cutting into the
mounds. Both mounds were trenched in making the road, and it is likely that a large portion
of the top of the burial mound was taken away to use as fill. Local inhabitants report that
numeroU5 articulated human skeletons were found in the burial mound at this time. The
excavations conducted by Mr. Lamme, from May to September, 1934, were in both the
burial mound and the habitation mound. That investigator reports that a trench was made
in the most northerly portion of the burial mound, on the west side of Bay Drive. Remains
of at least 50 individuals were discovered in these excavations. BudaI types included sec-
ondary bundle, single skulls, primary extended, and pr'imary flexed with secondary inter-
ment being the most common. ,A few of the bundle burials had been partially cremated as
thoue:h fires had been made beside the bones. Near the center of the mound, probably near.

mou;d base. 19 single skulls were found in a group. This mass burial was -uncove~ed in p. 80
trenching operations subsequent to those made on the northern edge of the mound.
Artifacts were not placed with the dead, and only a few artifacts, or artifact fragmentsl
came from the body of the mound. These last were not described.
The mound structure, as revealed by these excavations, is as follows. On the north
edge of the mound, the primary level was composed of sand which apparently had been
brought there for that purpose. This sand layer was followed by alternate stLltJ. of clay,
sand, clay, and dark sand. Presumably, all of this deposition was artificial anc purroseful,
none of it being occupational detritus. At one point in the notes, Mr. Lamme states that the
lower zone of the mound was semi-solidified, or calcified sand and midden, and that the
upper zone was relative!y loose sand. The burials are purported to have come from the
lower, harder stratum.
The excavations made, at this time, in the black dirt habitation mound also encountered
"two distinct strata with two types of pottery." The specific nature of these strata distinc,
tions is not further elucidated. Materials coming from the midden are listed as potsherds,
projectile points, perforated fossil shark teeth, bone points, bone pins, stone sinkers, shell
celts, conch shdl adzes or picks (these in great quantity), shell and stone pendants, grinding
stones, and a ring of deer bone.
Unfortunately, the skeletal material recovered from the burial mound was stolen before
shipment to museum or laboratory was possible. None of the artifacts, from'hther burial
mound or habiotion site excavations made at this timc are available for study and their
pres~nt whereabouts is, unknowl}.
The excwations described in the field notes submitted by Mr. Reichard wcre all con'
finC'd to the habitation mound. The portion of that mound In the west side of Bay Drive
was 'designated as Division A and that on the east siJe as Division 'B. A grid system of
5'-foot sqmrcs WJS Lud out, s.::raLltely"on both 1l10:.md di\'iciG::s. The desigmtions of this

trenches, running east-west. Artifacts were catalogued from various depths, the usual al'
bitrary level being 6 in€hes. . ~
In Division A three Ion a excavations included: Trench 1 (SectlOns 1 to ::Ie); 1 rench 19
(Sections 14 to 3~); and Sec~ions 12 and 13 (Trenches 1 to 18;' Additional sma~er cuts;
totaling some 20 5-foot trench-section blocks, were taken out ... d group betwo;;en ~ renches
I and 19. Compared to the previous work of the 1934 SeaSO!I, r.I:,e 193;-36 excavations (from
mid,November to mid-January) removed about five or six times the total cublc nudden
content of the former. '
The Division B excavations were almost as extensive as those in A. Approximately 5'0
5..foot trench-section units were removed. These were arranged in four long trenches, three
running north-south and one cutting through the east-west axis of the site. Matierials were
segregated into various arbitrary levels.
. Mr. Reichard made the following observations during these excavations. Pottiery sherds
were noted to be most abundant in the: southwest quarter of Division B. Animal bones
were extremely plentiful in all parts of the midden, and many ash pits or fire areas further
bolstered the belief that the mound was an old occupation site. Besides potsherds, the most
common artifacts found in the midden were shell ceits, bone pins ano points, and ovoid
stones with encircling grooves. No burials were found in the midden proper, but a few
primary interments were discovered in shallow graves In open ground a short distance
away from the habitation refuse.'
ARTIPACTS

The photographs of the pottery from this second list of artitacts trom Surfside do not
reveal any significant diffcrcnces from those in the U. S. National Museum. There is only
one shcrd worth special mention.. This is a rim lug (PI. 14, K) of a ware that cannot be
determined from the photograph. The lug is a flat, rcctanguloid, rim projection with incised
decorations on the upper surface. These consist of a bordcring incised line connecting with a
.Jine encircling the vessel on top of the lip, and an incised triangle within the border. There
is a deep, large triangular punctate within thc incised triangle. The technique is suggestive
of W ccden Island, but the design arrangcmcnt and shape of the lug do not have specific
Wecden Island parallels. Th; non-ceramic artifacts in Reichard's list, to judge from the pic-
tures, arc much the same as those in the National Museum collection. Somc of the more un-
usual specimcns includc a stonc celt of trapezoidal form and a fragmcnt of a crude filigree
type shell gorget. This last originally consisted of a shell ring with at least one inner cross-
piece. RcichJrd also lists and illustrJtes a single shell pendant .or plummet. The plummct
type of pendant, 111 either stonc or shelL was extremely rare at Surfsidc. It is possible that
thc longitudinal grooved swnes serv.::d the same function, and plummets wcre not, or only
occasionally, manufactured. - ' .' -. '

DISTRIBUTION OP ARTIPACTS
Stratigraphic analyses of the Surfside midden collections yielded slim positive results.
This is undoubtedly due to the fact that the refuse had been disturbed by previous excava-
ti".1s and that only a portion of the materials obtained were available for study. Although
Dr. Juli:i.n H, Steward ~personal communication) and John M. Goggin (I9-tOJ.) are of. the
impression that there were certain ceral~c changes in midden depth, a checking of vertical
position on all Fotsherds fails to firmly substantiate this field impression. For instanc~, Bis,
caync en;:::d: Stamped occurs in approximately the same proportions at all depths in the ref,
use. In bot.~ A and B Divisions of the mound the type Ghdes Plain hag only a slightly.
greater rr.::quency in the lo\'.:er than in the upper half of tb: deposit. The best evidence for a
timc .::!:.;C is pronGed by ~llip variation in Glades Plain. In Division A, nearly all of the Glades

Among the non-c~ramic artifacts there are no suggestions of any depth trends.
