Gonzalez, City Manager DATE: August 25, 2008 SUBJECT: Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup Day September 20, 2008 The purpose of this LTC is to inform you that the City of Miami Beach Community Resource and Outreach Team and the Environmental Coalition of Miami Beach (ECOMB) are working together in organizing four environmental cleanup projects in conjunction with Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup Day scheduled for Saturday, September 20, 2008. Community partners participating in this event include the U. S. Coast Guard, Carnival Cruise Line and the Miami Dade County Bar Association. City of Miami Beach Public Works, Parks, Police and Parking Departments will be joined by the Miami Dade County Parks and Recreation Beach Operations Division to provide support services necessary to undertake the projects. International Coastal Cleanup Day is the world's largest volunteer event of its kind. Last year 378,000 volunteers from 76 countries and 45 states cleared six million pounds of trash from oceans and waterways and recorded every piece of trash collected. This year in the City of Miami Beach four projects will be as follows; Monument Island - ECOMB volunteers will meet in Maurice Gibb Park to be transported to Monument Island. ECOMB is coordinating the volunteer transportation. The volunteers will focus primarily on the removal and proper disposal of litter. It is anticipated that over 100 volunteers from throughout Miami Dade County will participate in this event. North Shore Open Space Park and Beach Cleanup -Approximately 70 volunteers from the Miami Dade Bar Association and others will meet at 81St Street in North Shore Open Space Park to clean in the park and along the beach from 79th to 86th Streets. Lummus Park/Beach Cleanup -Team Coast Guard volunteers will meet at 5th Street in Lummus Park to start the beach cleanup project. Last year approximately 300 volunteers participated in this effort and record numbers are predicted for this year. The cleanup will be between Government Cut and 10th Street . Beach Cleanup -Carnival Cruise Line volunteers wilt meet at 36th Street at the entrance to the beach to pick up litter along the beach between 22~d and 46th Streets. Approximately 50 volunteers are expected. Volunteers for all of the projects may register at ecomb(a7ecomb.orq and learn about the projects in more specific detail.
