Gonzalez, City Manager :ATF January 22, 2009 suB1CC~ Police Department's `Operation Rolling Thunder' This Letter to the City Commission is to provide information on the Police Departments successful end of year proactive initiative "Operation Rolling Thunder'. This initiative was conducted from November 3, 2008 through January 11, 2009. The months of November, December and January are traditionally busy months for City of Miami Beach as tourists from around the world transcend to our City. The intent of "Operation Rolling Thunder" was to provide an enhanced level of police presence and public safety that would begin immediately following the Police Department's Halloween Detail, continuing through the holiday season, and concluding after the Orange Bowl and BCS National Championship games. Throughout the Miami-Dade area, the State of Florida, and the nation as a whole, crime has been on the rise. This is a product of the decline in economic conditions, rising unemployment, and various other socioeconomic factors. This combination has had a direct negative impact on crime rates throughout our society. In an effort to combat crime, "Operation Rolling Thunder" was implemented as a holistic plan to aggressively curtail criminal activity during one of our City's busiest periods. This initiative involved personnel from all Divisions working together in a collaborative effort to deter crime and produced the following statistics: • Felony Arrests 139 • Misdemeanor Arrests 1 • Total Arrests 1,226 • Total Moving Citations 2.677 As was done with "Operation Rolling Thunder', the Police Department will continue to make every effort to proactively and innovatively combat crime, to improve public safety, and the quality of life for the citizens of Miami Beach.
