2001-24502 RESO RESOLUTION NO. 2001-24502 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, RESPECTFULLY REQUESTING THAT THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION DO NOT IMPLEMENT A RECOMMENDED SAFETY PROJECT PLANNED FOR SR 907/ALTON ROAD'S WESTBOUND ON RAMP TO SR 112/JULIA TUTTLE CAUSEWAY, SCHEDULED FOR CONSTRUCTION IN FISCAL YEAR 2001-02. WHEREAS, only one southbound lane on SR 907/Alton Road is presently dedicated to traffic utilizing the on-ramp to westbound SR 112/Julia Tuttle Causeway, causing unsafe merging movements on Alton Road itself; and WHEREAS, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has programmed a $111,075 safety project for construction in Fiscal Year 2001-02, that would utilize two existing southbound lanes on Alton Road to access the one-lane on ramp to westbound Julia Tuttle Causeway (the Project); and WHEREAS, the Alton Road residents and the Alton Road Homeowners Association believe that this proposed dual-lane access to the one lane on ramp will attract additional traffic onto southbound Alton Road, and, therefore, vehemently oppose the Project. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City Commission respectfully request that the Florida Department of Transportation do not implement a recommended Safety Project planned for SR 907/ Alton Road' s westbound on ramp to SR l12/Julia Tuttle Causeway, scheduled for construction in Fiscal Year 2001-02, PASSED AND APPROVED this the 27th day of .Tune ,2001 IX MAYOR ATTEST: JUbVaMk CITY CLERK - I.PPROVED 1.8 TO FORM & LANGUI.GE & FOREXECU1lON AM 1A.".~/.Jj. 7-ID-0..1 /~- F:\WOll.K'nAAIIl.MELIA\fl:101\rITUlN,,1<F.lI m - ';.-.' No. j'-l J-C)(jY) / LETTER TO COMMISSION June 21, 2001 TO: Mayor Neisen O. Kasdin and Members of the City Commission FROM: Jorge M. Gonzalez, City Manager SUBJECT: SR 907/ALTON ROAD/JULIA TUTTLE CAUSEWAY ON-RAMP PROJECT This is in response to Commissioner Bower's inquiry regarding the scheduled safety improvements for the Alton Road on-ramp to Julia Tuttle Causeway, The improvements will be implemented by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) in the very near future, The project has been let and FDOT is in the process of selecting the contractor for the job, The FDOT project will address existing and recurring safety problems that have been created by southbound Alton Road traffic, which utilizes the on-ramp to westbound Julia Tuttle Causeway, Motorists in the left travel lane often make a last-minute and hazardous weaving movement onto the designated (right) travel lane to access the on ramp, This movement has resulted accidents and/or near collisions on a daily basis during the morning and mid-day peak hours, The improvement will allow for two lanes to feed into the on ramp, instead of the existing one, therefore eliminating the need for the weaving condition associated with motorists trying to access the on ramp, This will produce a much smoother and safer transition from Alton Road to the Julia Tuttle Causeway, The improvement will not result in additional operational capacity along the Alton Road corridor. Attached is a diagram showing the improvements for your review, If you have any further questions please contact either me or Joseph Johnson for further details on this improvement J-+>>rdgh P,lWOIOOSTllA'VU!lA\lTCALrnN,W\'I) \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ I \ I -1/ \ +", I ),s.-' I -,<~"'~ "?"~ " ,,0,,\ ,?
