LTC # 056-2009 LETTER TO COMMISSION TO: Mayor Matti Herrera Bower and Members of the City Commission FROM: Jorge M. Gonzalez, City Manager DATE: February 24, 2009 SUBJECT Miami Beach Chamber Supports International Baccalaureate Program The purpose of this Letter to Commission (LTC) is to update the Mayor and Commissioners on the status of the implementation of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program pursuant to the City of Miami Beach Education Compact agreed to on January 16, 2008. The Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce made a donation at their annual Golf Classic benefiting The Miami Beach Education Foundation to Fienberg Fisher K-8 Center and the City of Miami Beach to support the implementation of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program. The Chamber is doing this in partnership with the City of Miami Beach and the Miami Dade County Public School System as part of the new Miami Beach Education Compact. The $6,620 donation will fund the annual fee for the school upon authorization by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) in 2010. The International Baccalaureate program in Miami Beach will: Provide all students the same access to develop into IBO diploma candidates; prepare our students to become active global citizens; be offered with equal access throughout Miami Beach and set criteria at the high-school level with standards that provide ample room to promote equity. The Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce has a long history of involvement and support of education on Miami Beach, and currently has a very active Education as Business Committee. The Chamber has indicated that this is only partial funding for this worthwhile program for all Miami Beach public school students.
