SUSIECI Reforestation Program Status
This Letter to Commission is to inform you about the accomplishments of the city's Reforestation
Program during its first two years of implementation, especially in light of recent inquiries from
Commissioners on behalf of residents requesting trees, and the recent donation of palms to the City.
The Reforestation Program, which the City adopted and initiated in 2007: calls for the planting of
5000 trees in parks, street swales and other public properties over afour-year period. The
Program's goal is to replace the thousands of trees destroyed by recent hurricanes and to increase
shade canopy coverage within the city limits. To achieve this goal, trees are being planted in all
appropriate spaces in the city's rights-of-way, parks and other city properties, with the intent of
providing the optimal number of trees consistent with each location's characteristics, uses and
priorities. For example, the recently-donated royal palms are most appropriately placed in areas
where similar trees are already located, or where that type of tree best meets the needs of the area.
Another goal is to increase the diversity of tree species in the city's urban forest, reducing the
potential for devastating tree losses due to species-specific diseases and pests. The program
coordinates with the Public Works Department and Capital Improvement Program to ensure that
current Program projects supplement tree plantings that are planned as part of street improvement
projects, allowing the Program to focus in areas where plantings would not otherwise occur.
In 2007, the reforestation program's first year, 1,123 trees of sixty-four different species were
planted in twenty-five locations throughout the city. In 2008, 1,439 trees of eighty species were
planted inthirty-six locations. Some locations received only one tree (such aswhen a dead tree was
replaced), while other locations (such as large parks) received over a hundred trees. In total, the
reforestation program has planted 2,562 trees in its first two years, bringing the city more than half
way to its target of 5,000 trees. By area, North Beach received 931 trees, Mid Beach received 1,258
trees, and South Beach received 373 trees. Areas with the most planting spaces, for example large
parks and streets outside of CIP projects, received the most trees. We have provided for your
reference the lists of plantings for FY 07 and 08.
During FY 08109, the program plans to plant 850 trees. Most of the spaces that are available to the
reforestation project received trees during 2007 or 2008, or will receive trees in 2009. A number of
potential tree planting locations are not available to the program because they are in current CfP
project areas, in planned CIP project areas where there will be Swale disturbance, or in parks
awaiting master plans or planned renovations. The Parks & Recreation Department is working with
CIP to identify areas in which reforestation project tree planting can supplement CIP planting. In
2008, trees were provided for the Orchard Park neighborhood, Belle Isle Park, Normandy Shores
Golf Course. and 52nd - 62i0 streets as part of these cooperative efforts. Cooperation will continue
in 2008. and two locations have already been identified: the Bayshore neighborhood, and 51" to
62n0 Streets between North Bay Road and Alton Road.
Referrals to the Parks Department of resident requests are considered consistent with our approach
of confirming the status of Public Works or CIP (or other) projects, and the status of the program.
As you are aware, staff has accommodated requests whenever possible.
